About
Trampled By Turtles is an Americana powerhouse originating from Duluth, Minnesota. The group was formed in 2003 by frontman Dave Simonett (vocals, guitar) as a side project, following a gear theft incident that led him to explore acoustic sounds. The band features Ryan Young (fiddle), who brings a unique edge with his background in speed metal drumming, Tim Saxhaug (bass), Erik Berry (mandolin), and Dave Carroll (banjo). Together, they craft a dynamic blend of folk rock, bluegrass, and roots rock, creating a sound that is both fast-paced and deeply rooted in traditional Americana.
How to Sound Like Trampled By Turtles
Trampled By Turtles’ sound is characterized by its energetic, acoustic-driven arrangements that blend the frenetic pace of bluegrass with the raw energy of rock. Their music is both dynamic and organic, with Simonett's use of acoustic guitars such as the Waterloo WL-JK, Gibson L-00, and Martin D-35 offering a warm, resonant tone that cuts through the mix. The interplay between the fiddle and banjo adds a layer of melodic complexity, while the mandolin and bass provide rhythmic drive. The band's approach relies on a natural, unprocessed sound, emphasizing dynamic contrasts and the emotive power of acoustic instrumentation to create their vibrant, foot-stomping performances.
