About
Tribes is a British indie rock band known for their energetic performances and compelling songwriting. Formed in Camden Town, London in 2010, the band comprises Johnny Lloyd (vocals, guitar), Dan White (guitar), Jimmy Cratchley (bass), and Miguel Demelo (drums). Tribes quickly built a following with their captivating live shows and early demos that caught the attention of notable figures like Frank Black of the Pixies. Their debut EP, We Were Children, and subsequent albums like Baby and Wish to Scream have solidified their position in the indie rock scene, drawing comparisons to fellow British acts such as Arctic Monkeys and The Kooks.
How to Sound Like Tribes
Tribes' sound is characterized by a gritty yet melodic quality, combining the raw energy of 90s rock with the anthemic choruses of modern indie. The guitars frequently employ a crunchy, overdriven tone, achieved through the use of classic British-style amps and pedals, creating a rich tapestry of sound that drives their music forward. Bass lines, often delivered through Fender Precision and Jazz Basses, add depth and groove, enhanced by effects like the Electro-Harmonix Bass Big Muff Pi Fuzz for a more pronounced, fuzz-driven presence. The drums maintain a tight and punchy feel, providing a dynamic backbone that complements the band’s spirited vocal delivery and infectious hooks. This combination of elements results in a sound that is both nostalgic and fresh, capturing the essence of British indie rock with a modern twist.
