About
Ultraje a Rigor is a Brazilian rock band formed in São Paulo in 1981, widely associated with the rise of Brazilian rock in the 1980s. Founded by Roger Rocha Moreira (vocals, guitar), the group’s best-known lineup has also included Marcos Kleine (guitar), Mingau (bass), and Bacalhau (drums). Their music mixes rock, pop rock, ska, new wave, and comedy rock, pairing sharp, humorous lyrics with direct, riff-driven arrangements that helped make songs like “Inútil,” “Mim Quer Tocar,” and “Nós Vamos Invadir Sua Praia” staples of Brazilian popular music.
How to Sound Like Ultraje A Rigor
To get close to Ultraje a Rigor’s sound, think tight, punchy, and dry rather than huge or heavily atmospheric. The guitars are typically built on bright overdrive, crunchy power chords, and concise lead lines, with a strong new wave and pub rock sense of attack instead of dense distortion or ambient layering. Bass should feel forward and rhythmic, often locking closely with a straight, energetic drum groove that keeps the songs moving with a danceable bounce, especially when the band leans into ska and pop influences. Vocals work best with a clear, conversational delivery that lets the wit and sarcasm of the lyrics come through. In production terms, aim for clean separation between instruments, compact room ambience, and arrangements that leave space for hooks, since their style depends more on groove, attitude, and memorable riffs than on elaborate studio texture.
