About

Variety Lab is a French electronic music collective known for their eclectic blend of nu jazz, lounge, and electro jazz. Originating from Nancy, France, the group is spearheaded by producer Thierry Bellia, who collaborates with a core ensemble featuring Jérôme Didelot (bass), Alexandre Longo (keyboards), and Jacques Tellitocci (percussion, vibraphone). Since their emergence in 2002 with the lounge hit "London in the Rain," Variety Lab has been recognized for their sophisticated soundscapes and collaboration with diverse vocalists, as showcased in albums like Providence and Team Up!.

How to Sound Like Variety Lab

Variety Lab's sound is characterized by smooth, downtempo grooves and sophisticated, jazz-inflected melodies. Their music often features lush keyboard textures and vibraphone accents, creating a rich, atmospheric sound. To capture their vibe, musicians might focus on using analog synthesizers and electric pianos that deliver warm, vintage tones. Percussion elements should be nuanced and dynamic, employing techniques like brushes on drums to maintain a subtle, laid-back feel. Bass lines should be fluid and melodic, anchoring the compositions while allowing room for intricate melodic interplay between instruments. The use of space and reverb is crucial for adding depth and ambiance, enhancing the lounge-like quality that defines Variety Lab's inviting, cosmopolitan sound.
