About
We Are the Ocean is a British rock band originating from the remnants of the group Dead But Still Dreaming. Formed in 2007, the band initially showcased a lineup featuring Dan Brown (vocals), Liam Cromby (guitar, vocals), Alfie Scully (guitar), Jack Spence (bass), and Tom Whittaker (drums). Known for their dynamic fusion of screamo, post-hardcore, and British alternative rock, We Are the Ocean quickly cultivated a dedicated fan base, leading to significant early recognition. Their evolution over time saw Cromby taking over vocal duties, further diversifying their sound with a more melodic approach in later works.
How to Sound Like We Are the Ocean
We Are the Ocean's sound is characterized by its energetic and emotive intensity, blending aggressive and melodic elements to create a compelling auditory experience. Their music often features punchy guitar riffs and soaring vocal harmonies, supported by a robust rhythm section. The guitars, typically delivered with a gritty edge, benefit from the use of overdrive and distortion pedals, which help achieve their signature post-hardcore vibe. The band's earlier work has a raw, unpolished feel, while later albums incorporate more atmospheric elements. Bassist Dan Brown’s use of the Fender Jazz Bass contributes to the band's rich tonal depth, while the Alembic F-1X preamp adds a clean yet powerful low-end presence, complementing their aggressive yet melodic aesthetic.
