About
Westkust is a Swedish band known for their compelling blend of noise pop, dream pop, and shoegaze. Originating from Gothenburg, the group initially formed in 2010 and solidified their lineup with Julia Bjernelind (vocals, guitar), Philip Söderlind (drums), and Rikard Hjort (bass), later joined by members from the band Makthaverskan including Gustav Andersson (guitar/vocals) and Hugo Randulv (bass/guitar). Over time, the lineup evolved to include Brian Cukrowski (guitar) and Pär Karlsson (bass), with Bjernelind becoming the primary vocalist. Known for their wall-of-sound guitars and swirling melodies, Westkust has released albums like Last Forever and Westkust that showcase their evolution from dreamy soundscapes to more aggressive tones.
How to Sound Like Westkust
Westkust's sound is characterized by dense, layered guitar textures and ethereal, yet powerful vocals. To emulate their sonic landscape, focus on creating a wall-of-sound effect with heavy reverb and delay pedals. The guitars often have a fuzzy, saturated tone, achieved through overdrive and distortion pedals, which blend seamlessly with modulated effects for added depth. The use of dynamic drumming and driving basslines provides a rhythmic foundation that supports their intricate melodies. For musicians aiming to capture Westkust's sound, embracing shoegaze-inspired production techniques such as extensive use of reverb and delay will be essential, along with ensuring a balance between melodic clarity and textural complexity in the mix.
