About
Woods of Ypres was a Canadian metal band that formed in Toronto in 2002, known for their unique blend of doom metal, sludge metal, black metal, and gothic metal. The band was initially founded by David Gold (vocals, guitar), Aaron Palmer (bass, vocals), and Brian McManus (guitar, vocals). Over the years, the lineup evolved to include members such as Joel Violette (guitar, bass), Raphael Weinroth-Browne (cello), and Angela Schleihauf (oboe). Woods of Ypres was celebrated for their emotionally charged music and complex compositions, which were released on Gold's label, Krankenhaus Records. Despite the tragic passing of David Gold in 2011, the band left a lasting impact on the underground metal scene with albums like Woods 5: Grey Skies & Electric Light.
How to Sound Like Woods of Ypres
The music of Woods of Ypres is characterized by its dark, melancholic atmosphere, blending the crushing weight of doom metal with the raw intensity of black metal. Their sound is often gloomy and textured, creating an enveloping sonic landscape that is both haunting and introspective. The use of rich, distorted guitar tones was central to their music, with David Gold frequently playing guitars like the Gibson SG-3 "UNREST" and Gibson Custom SG Floyd Rose. These instruments, combined with layered instrumentation including cello and oboe, contributed to the band's expansive and emotive sound. Drums and bass provided a heavy, driving foundation, while the incorporation of orchestral elements added depth and a sense of melancholy to their compositions.
