About
Xscape is an American R&B group renowned for their harmonious blend of Contemporary R&B and Quiet Storm music. Formed in 1990 in Atlanta, Georgia, the group originally comprised four members: LaTocha Scott (vocals), Tamika Scott (vocals), Kandi Burruss (vocals), and Tameka "Tiny" Cottle (vocals). The Scott sisters, rooted in the gospel tradition through their father's influence, joined forces with Burruss and Cottle during their high school years. Their smooth vocal harmonies and emotive lyrics quickly captured the attention of producer Jermaine Dupri, leading to a record deal with So So Def Recordings. Xscape achieved commercial success with platinum-certified albums like Hummin' Comin' at 'Cha and Off the Hook, and their music remains a staple in the R&B genre.
How to Sound Like Xscape
Xscape's sound is characterized by soulful, rich vocal harmonies and lush, melodious arrangements. Their music often features smooth, layered vocals that intertwine seamlessly with gentle, rhythmic backdrops. To capture the essence of their sound, musicians might focus on creating warm, intimate vocal textures using vocal harmonizers and layering techniques. The instrumental arrangement typically includes soft, groove-laden bass lines and subtle, understated percussion that contribute to a relaxed yet emotionally resonant atmosphere. Analog synthesizers and electric pianos can be employed to add depth and warmth, while reverb and delay effects provide the spaciousness and smoothness that define their quiet storm ballads. The overall production is polished, emphasizing clarity and balance, which allows the emotional delivery of the vocals to shine through.
