About
Zeal & Ardor is a Swiss avant-garde metal project and touring band founded by Manuel Gagneux (vocals, guitar, songwriting), built around a striking fusion of black metal, blues, spirituals, and experimental heavy music. Originating in Basel, the group became known for pairing the harsh intensity of extreme metal with call-and-response vocals, gospel-inflected melodies, and dark Americana textures. In its live and recording incarnations, Zeal & Ardor has expanded beyond a solo project into a full band, with Gagneux at the center of a sound that moves between black metal, progressive metal, melodic death metal, blues, and experimental rock.
How to Sound Like Zeal & Ardor
To get close to Zeal & Ardor’s sound, think in terms of contrast: raw, aggressive distortion set against tight vocal harmonies, handclap-like rhythms, and stark blues phrasing. The guitars are often dry, sharp, and percussive rather than washed out, with tremolo-picked black metal passages giving way to riff-driven grooves and near-ritual rhythmic repetition. Vocals are just as important as the guitars—layer harsh screams, clean lead lines, and gospel-style group responses to create tension between violence and uplift. Drums should feel precise and forceful, shifting from blast-beat intensity to head-nodding, almost processional grooves. In production, avoid overly polished ambience; Zeal & Ardor works best when the mix feels immediate, dark, and confrontational, with enough separation to let the choral parts, syncopated riffs, and dynamic stops hit hard.
