fine for one track at a time... better if paired with external board.

I used it for a week, back in 2015. It's meant to use with chrome tape, and tho I only had type 1's at hand, it worked fine. All in all, fun to use. Regarding specs, treble tops at 12k-ish, it's one speed only (1 7/8 ips, your standard speed). Standard transport controls. Has one mic and one line/inst input, stereo phone jack and 2 phonos on the back. Records only one track at a time.

It's as stripped-down as it gets: no EQ, noise reduction, direct outs... no way of bouncing tracks 'cept for recording the mix (levels and pan only!) to another medium. I had a behringer x2442USB as front-end, so I summed 2 drum mics on the way in... adding tons of treble to see if I could improve it. Anyways, hiss was a given but a lesser concern when recorded in appropriate levels. (can you hear GIRATS faintly echoing?)

You can check out a cover I did on the X14, the ventures's "walk don't run" on YouTube. I recorded drums a la tchad blake, DI'd bass and DI'd strat on the latter tracks. FF couple days I invited a bandmate so we did live drums & bass to one track; lead vocal + punched-in guitar solo onto another, keys and backing vocals to another one, and finally amp'd guitar. With planning ahead (and a way of summing more inputs prior to the deck) you can get pretty far! Its saturation was gorgeous especially on lows and drums. One of the few moments where I actually liked a fuzzy kick drum. I'd like it better if it could at least bounce and have direct outs. Back then I disagreed with a late 90's review that quoted "nice as a notepad, unsuitable for serious work" smth like that. For my needs 5-6 years ago it was plenty, but I backed off as I saw little leeway on expanding... didn't want to mod it either.
