Epiphone Les Paul Standard. Great guitar and only around $400-450.

I owned a DS-1 previously and they are okay. They don't have much character though. I picked up a TC Electronic Dark Matter for £35.00 the other day and it was immense. Great sound and tonality especially at that price. Definitely recommend that Pro Co Rat 2 or the Ibanez Mini tube screamer if you're looking at budget.

You can get hold of a Fender Squier Bullet Strat for £89 new or £50 and less second hand. I had one previously and it was a decent guitar for the money, though that doesn't matter so much if you're going to be modifying it. A nice set of pickups and a proper set up could really boost the Bullet Strat.
