Irish blues guitarist Rory Gallagher had a unique style and a unique tone. In march 2008 we flew down to London on a mission to try and recreate Rory’s favourite booster, the ‘Hawk’. With help from Rory’s brother (and band tour manager) Donal Gallagher, Tom O’Driscoll (band amp tech) and Daniel Gallagher (Donal’s musician son) we meticulously photographed and carefully measured every component on Rory’s original Hawk. From these photographs and drawings our Rory Gallagher signature Hawk booster was born.

Rory’s original booster was well used but otherwise functioning as it should. Very carefully it was deconstructed and each component measured and recorded. The circuit was redrawn exactly but we upgraded the design with more reliable rotary pots instead of the original sliders. The original booster also had a two way volume switch which we changed to a variable rotary pot control. C&K switch’s, Switchcraft sockets, Tantalum caps and the best low noise components make the Flynn Amps Hawk a fitting tribute to the worlds greatest blues guitarist.

One of the reasons is the limited dynamic range from your guitar input, usually way less than 1v peak to peak at maximum signal levels. When using a booster you can increase the maximum level at the amp input to several volts. This now gives you a much wider signal change between your loudest notes to your softest notes. The sonic effect of this is amazing touch sensitivity and control of your drive, all from your fingers and guitar volume pot.

Most distortion pedals use diodes and op amps to clip your guitar signal and create artificial distortion. Great if you want that buzzy fizzy tone but not really a true overdrive. Overdrive literally meant giving the amp a kick to distort the tubes more.

What is the Garbage Face Jr pedal?

Matthew Holl (owner of Wren and Cuff) has had a working relationship with Dinosaur Jr’s J Mascis for many years now. After years of working together, Matthew approached J with the idea of doing a signature pedal based on J’s favorite vintage Muff pedal.

That pedal, an early 70’s “Ram’s Head” Big Muff® purchased by J on tour in 1987, was the model used to create the Garbage Face Jr. Matthew and J worked together to ensure that the final unit was a dead on replica of his treasured pedal.

That idea became The Garbage Face, J’s full-size dual volume Fuzz/Treble-Booster signature pedal. Following its release, there were requests for a stripped down three knob version of the distortion side of that pedal only.

The Garbage Face Jr answers that request.

A DIMENSION WORTH GETTING LOST IN.

Echolution 3 is a multi-tap stereo modulation delay offering a myriad of sound design options including reverse, jump, pong, modulation tempo sync, variable low pass filter, flexible signal routing and comprehensive MIDI control. Delay times ranging from 100ms to 5 seconds can be dialed in using the Time knob or via Tap Tempo using the left footswitch. A second delay tap can be set to the same length or a fraction of the main delay time to create rhythmic echoes. The ¾ fraction creates a dotted eight note delay, while the Golden fraction uses the sacred geometry of the Golden Ratio (.382) as the multiplier for the second tap. The multi-tap settings can be even further enhanced by the stereo ping pong effect, which causes the different delay taps to switch sides on each repeat. Store up to 4 presets, unlock hidden features with the Universal Remote footswitch, and design yet unheard delay lines. Runs on standard 9VDC.

KNOB-BY-KNOB

Time: Sets the length of the delay line. Overrides tap tempo and vice versa. Select sub-divisions with the small push button. Can activate any two sub-divisions at once.

Mix: Sets the volume level of the delay signal.

Repeats: Sets the amount of regeneration in the delay line.

Mod: Select and set the modulation Speed, Depth, and Tone. Hold push button to sync Speed to tap tempo.

Preset Select: Push to toggle through presets, press and hold to select. To save a preset after making changes, press and hold. Presets can be toggled and selected using only footswitches (see manual).

Special FX: Reverse makes the delay line go backwards. Jump makes the delay line jump up one octave. Pong (activated with a push and hold) causes echoes to alternate between the left and right channels, meant to be used in stereo.

BREAK RULES AND BUILD WORLDS

Designed to offer a streamlined user experience and a massive feature set, Echolution 3 is a worldbuilder. In a compact package, “E3” offers multi-tap delay lines, with sound design FX options ranging from the subtly cinematic to the outlandishly dramatic. I/O options include stereo output, MIDI sync, and additional footswitch features. On board presets make revisiting your favorite corners of the Echolution 3 universe simple.

HOW TO DISAPPEAR COMPLETELY

Marvin has come across Echolutions in the Pigtronix universe before—but never quite like this. Echolution 3 is a supermassive black hole leading to a vivid dimension stuffed with color, light, and the unexplainable, causing the voyager to lose his or herself more deeply than they knew was possible. In this dimension, the imagination tends to expand: familiar figures appear in cloud formations, meteorites can be sat on like bean bag chairs, and ropes of light can be swung on like vines.

With 10 individual True Bypass Loops you can have a separate loop for all your pedals and maybe a few left over for your future pedals too! What this can do for your sound and stage/studio setup is incredible, not just because of the true bypass benefits, but the organization of all your pedals, just think - only one switching device to control all your effects, it's a serious tone saving machine!
