What should I buy next?

Hey! So, I've got a bit of money, and I have to choose between 3 equipment. So, on my current setup, I'm using a Korg MicroKontrol, and a Ableton Push 1. Now, After searching for a bit, I got these paths that I can explore: I can have a Native Instruments Maschine MKI, or a Maschine Mikro MK2. Else, I can have a Novation LaunchControl XL, or an Arturia Beatstep. Or maybe I should take something else for my setup? What should I do? Thanks!

How much money are we talking? Novation's best low cost product to add to a setup that's already doing a lot if digital stuff is hands down the circuit monostation. Total sleeper. It's a bass station synth engine sequenced by a circuit/launchpad style 2 channel sequencer. If you set it up right you can sequence the internal synth and another piece of hardware. It also has a separate CV sequencer channel that's very handy. It might be out if your price range though. I can never bring myself to get rid of mine. Every time I think about selling it I wind up putting it back in one of my rigs. For full transparency I should confess that I am part of Novation's artist program.

From arturia I find keystep more useful than beatstep.

I see you've got a broken mu-r201? Is it turning on? There's often an issue with the power supply on these guys if they get banged around. Easy fix actually.

Hey, thanks for the advice. Yeah, I kinda banged it around. It's just doing some weird noises on top of the normal sounds. But now, I also broke my 2004 Mbox 1 somehow :( (It's just producing no sounds at all, except super loud clicks). Note that the mic I was using for chatting on Discord with friends used this card, so now I'm using an Xbox 360 Kinect to chat with friends x)

And so about the money, I'm French, and the government had decided to give 300€ to everyone who get 18yo, dedicated to be spend on culture. Since I'm not reading book nor going to concerts or movie theater, I'll use this money on music instruments.

If it turns on it's not in the power supply. Bummer. The 201 is one of my favorite reverbs, up there with lexicon and AMSunits if the era. The true stereo operation was way ahead of its time.

I love that. Government ought to write more checks for gear. I think 300€ will get you a lit on the used market.

But I'm quite sure it's prob just a capacitor that is dead, but the problem with modern material is that it's all on boards, so it's super annoying to do anything, and I'm also too lazy to do it. And yeah, I buy everything used anyway. Don't have money to buy recent stuff, and most of the stuff I use is old, because better.

And I forgot that I have a Akai DR4d, but it's broken (actually just the disk, but it cost tons of money)

Excellent.

Would you be able to spend the money on musical instruction? Investing in yourself and your abilities is something that I've never regretted spending money on.

Re: Mbox 1. It's a 20 year old interface that has somehow lasted a decade longer for you than Avid/Digi anticipated, impressive. That said, anything that requires a driver to interface with your computer is more like a family pet than a family member -- you have to accept that you're eventually going to outlive it by several lifetimes. Do the right thing and please let it die with some dignity.

You're right. I'll burry it tomorrow in my garden 😔 (jk) But imagine you're in 2100, you dig a hole in your garden for installing an interplanetary radio receiver, and you find an old broken machinery from an hundred year ago :D

Guys, I have fun story to tell.
So, (as your may saw on my profile), I really want a Livid CNTRL:R. A guy create an announce on a website, selling his Livid OHM RGB for 100€. I saw that just 20 minutes after he released his thing. I sent him a message, and when I was just about to buy it 5 minutes later, it was sold.
I was sad because the deal was close.
But I sent him a message, offering him 120, he cancelled the order, and took mine, I was glad, but literally 5 minutes later, he cancelled mine, the other guy just bought him back for 130.

So close! What is it you want to do with that Livid that you can't already do with your Push?

I'm really want more encoders and faders. My Korg MicroKontrol have a bunch, but it's quite annoying to config them. The CNTRL:R is more modulable than the Push 1, and looks also more reliable (because the Ableton Push 1 is super based over its firmware, while the CNTRL:R a lot less). (also, it looks awesome with its huge 16 x2 pads longs thing dedicated for the timeline)

Makes sense. I've not known the Push 1 to be unreliable, but I never quite gelled with it myself. The footprint was just too big for my preferred work area.

Are you happy with the music you're currently making, and getting that music uploaded to the internet for others to enjoy? If the answer is "not yet", the Livid isn't likely to change that... but if you're rolling along and making lots of music you're happy with, the Livid might be a nice way to replace some of your other controllers.
