(Allegedly wrong) Item played by a band member who doesn't have equipboard artist page

Hello, so while listening to one of Connan Mockasin's lives I saw that one of his bandmates uses a Yamaha synth and I came here to see if it's added to someone's gear. I've come across this submission added to Connan: https://equipboard.com/pros/connan-mockasin/yamaha-dx21?src=link . Firstly I think that the gear might be wrong. It's not a Yamaha DX21 but a DX27. I added a Needs Improvement and commented "If you look closely at 24:06 you can see the "7" near the pedal so it's a DX27" but that's not the main issue. The dillema that I'm having is that the gear is played by his bandmate not by Connan. I've done some research and concluded that his mate's name is Rory McCarthy (some sources in the comment section of the post) and he doesn't have an artist page on equipboard. What do??

from a practical perspective the dx100, 21 and 27 are the same synth. The 4op engine is virtually identical on them as I recall, 12 bit mk1 FM DtoA... etc etc.... I would be looking at the keybeds as they vary most there and I think in the positioning of the wheels? I think they threw in a chorus on the 21 too. The 21 has the green buttons but they're the non-membrane ones like the TX7 which is great LOL

still its a lot like comparing an HS60 to the Juno106.... they're the same thing in a different box targeted at somewhat different markets.

  1. Good eye! To the best of my knowledge, the DX27 lacks the built-in chorus and split/layer capability of the DX21, so the differences are small, but worth noting. "Needs improvement" is a fair rating for the submission in question. Now we wait... a few years... and maybe someone with admin abilities will remove it or change the attributed instrument... IDK. Things like this tend to sit for awhile, not much we can do.

  2. If the actual Artist playing those keys doesn't have an Artist page, ADD THEM! :) Then attribute the DX-27 to that newly-added artist. 10 IQ points, easy money. I'm not sure what the gear IQ threshold is now for add-Artist capability, but surely you're past that threshold?

EDIT: Jim also mentioned the lack-of-chorus. Sorry to be redundant.

  • Roland SH-101
  • Roland TR-909 Rhythm Composer

Update: So I did more research about the guy and appearently he has an artistic project (stage name whatever) called "Infinite Bisous" and I submitted that because it's pretty official and verified. I've found on his insta a photo from the DX27 performance in cause and submitted the DX to his gear with both sources. Also his insta has some more gear pics so more ez IQ points for me :))

nicely done. cheers!

the attention to detail here is impressive... have you considered a career in investigative journalism?

Nah, I'm just a crazy fanboy who tries to ensure that the submissions are pretty accurate. I need the real proof :)) but I don't know how to proceed in such situations when new artists need to be added.
