I thought it might be interesting to see how everyone plays/writes, if we recorded, or videoed a riff, posted at somewhere, and put a link here, just to see what people come up with. I know some of us have soundcloud, or youtube. Any thoughts?

but seriously, how can one compare riffs? especially out of the context of a song? in context sometimes the most juvenile, rudimentary licks will be the best, whereas massively impressive and original modality can fall flat depending on the context.... and then there's the question of stylistic taste! I will automatically be less into metal stuff or effects driven parts, whereas narcist would probably be down on any country playing I submit because that's our taste.... How do you judge this contest?

if you're going to do it, it needs some guidelines.... like maybe a set of pre-recorded chord changes everyone needs to work within? I would say to create a repetitive chord change with and then record it in a number of different styles so people could pick a version and add a lead I guess... thogh I am more of a large ensemble or power trio guy.

And what is it with people and competitions? Its very helenistic to try to have a music contest.

I am suspicious you cooked up a riff you want to show off and that's what prompted this.
