Anybody Else Have Wierd Gear Buying Experiences?

Has anything like this ever happened to you? Read my story and answer the questions at the bottom for me please.

So I've been working on the side and saving my money for a new PRS Piezo equipped guitar. I am looking on Reverb & eBay & I find one that has the crushed gem stone eagle in the headstock and fret board, and unbelievably, it's in my price range. These eagles, so I am told, only go on the custom Private Stock guitars, so if you find one, see if the price is right. In this case it was in the $3K range, which is far below the new cost, and it was new! When I put an offer in on it, I was told the next morning that it went on layaway the night before, in their store.

OK I chock that one up to bad luck & timing & continue my search. So two weeks later, I find another nice solid body with custom features and finish, and a high cost. Again I put an offer in. This offer was hundreds less than they wanted, but within my budget, and to my shock, it was accepted. Oh crap, that money has to come out of the mattress now, right? Then, just like before, I was told that the night before, in the brick and mortar store, this guitar too was sold. This second axe was at a different store in a different part of the US and both are supposedly esteemed shops in the industry.

Now I ask you: has this ever happened to you? Do you suspect coincidence?

IF you are interested in the Paul Harvey ("...The Rest of The Story!):
The second shop felt badly, so for nicely within my budget, I am ordering a P22 Custom Artisan (just below the Private Stock but an upgrade from a 10-tops) built in the discontinued color and with the newer custom pickups I specified, and it'll get special electronics. The woods are being selected by the shop specially for this build from Paul's Artisan library "to match or exceed the look of the one that got away"

happens to me all the time... dealing with brick and mortar stores via the web can be frustrating but they often make it up to you to make you into a steady customer, just as you describe

my best luck scenario was when I decided to order a floor sample TC flashback X4 from a store in NYC, I got a brand new, sealed box for under $100... they honored my bid and when I asked them about it they said someone had bought it at the store the same exact time another employee accepted my but it now offer so they just gave me a new one for close to cost...

not all my stories like this end so well, but that's the cost of doing business... inventory software is at best only as fast as the employee completing a sale and only as accurate as what's input into the system (a lot of the coolest dealers don't barcode the tags, so there's a lot of room for human error)... I have so much stuff I can't keep track of what I own half the time, my equipboard is always behind date of whats been bought, sold and traded so I empathize with small retailers

So, Jim, thanks for sharing that mine is not an exceptional experience. I'll put this particular conspiracy theory back in the dark recesses of my paranoid mind, then. So they gave it to you for less than the "under $100 offer" you first made?

In my case they did make it up to me and then some, and I am getting exactly and precisely what I wanted, which is fortunate since this is my lifetime achievement guitar purchase. The steady customer part will pay diminishing returns, since this isn't a purchase I'll be making again. I do love the way that orange fade looks like a tequila sunrise, and with a maple neck, and 58/15's with reverse phasing, and a piezo blend, I'll know I'll be in hog heaven if I can only wait that long.

this isn't a purchase I'll be making again

you say that now
