I used to have respect for Phil but this is going too far. He's just a prick and the older and less naive I've got, the more I have realised. I highly recommend watching this if you have a minute

I reckon it was a joke, but it was definitely in poor taste. He's definiterly a bit of a prick, why couldn't that schizophrenic hit him instead, of dime.

Also GET SOME SLEEP! Or is it your daughter?

He's always been racist, you can see it at some shows and in some lyrics. I always thought he was taking the piss out of those like that but then he's from Texas and he loves his confederate flag so it just makes sense

I've never slept a huge amount really, I'll easily stay up reading books till 5am. I have ADHD, a lovely side effect but makes getting up in the night easier haha

  1. Him being from Texas has nothing to do it with. Every state and country has it's trash.

  2. Phil is shit. He's talent-less and I haven't paid attention to him much since Pantera. His interviews are the kind of stuff a 12 year old would say to feel tough about himself.

  3. All of Pantera were Pro white and Hispanic, Down everything else. The guys put out a record with David Alan Coe, the man who wrote songs about molesting under-aged girls, beating women into submission, and killing anyone who had any relationships with blacks. Pantera's stance, at least former stance, should not be a surprise. Their lyrics revealed this many times. Doesn't change my opinion of the music they wrote. Some songs I like, others I don't. Changing my musical taste due to a personal choice of the members would be nonsensical. "The drummer is this religion, the singer voted for this party last year, and I heard the bassist says he still eats at Chik-Fillet. I refuse to support them." I still hate Phil. He's a very ignorant waste of space. I could have had Pantera as a instrumental band and been fine with it. I still feel he is partly responsible for the Dimebag shooting. I would be more forgiving of it if he weren't such a twat.

  4. The controversy of the battle flag of the confederacy was recently dug up. Here's my rule from experience. Owning one a racist does not make. Generally though, the kind of people that get tattoos of it, drive with it off the back of their vehicles, and wear it on belt buckles are of a lower quality American. Quality as in education, influence, and intelligence. They lack the knowledge that pertains to the history, symbolism, and uses of ... well ... any flag to be honest. I own quite a few flags being that I have participated in war reenactments with my dad on occasion. I don't have it waving outside though either. It's folded up along with all my other memorabilia in a storage.

  5. Saying white power. Dumb. Toting any race or nationality at this point is stupid and you should treat the person this noise is coming out of as such. The idea that anyone would feel better about themselves because of something they didn't even do blows me away. "My grandfather was the greatest soldier in Vietnam and even shot down aliens". Great. He was awesome, the grandson is not "grandfathered" into awesome. We are individuals. Putting so much pride in an ancestry only shows how little the modern branch of that family has done. We can't do much about it here in the states. Limiting speech, especially geared only towards certain types of people, is a dangerous avenue to go down. It's a necessary inconvenience to those easily offended to maintain what few freedoms we still share here.

  6. I don't believe it was a joke. He's ended many shows screaming "white power".

I would comment that historically the confederate flag is less offensive than it is in a modern social context. Its association with the KKK, particularly during their worst periods of terrorism in the depression era and later against the civil rights movement has given it the status of a swastika. Historically the civil war was fought over mre than slavery. There was an interpretation of the constitution at its core that had been simmering since Jackson. On both sides of the fighting you found copious numbers of white supremacist non-slave-holders. In its historical context I think the battle flag is a symbol of armed revolt against an over-strong federal government. I also have known people to fly it in that spirit. I am not saying I approve, just commenting.

Seaking of Texas, while Texas seceded from the union and joined the confederacy with one of the most vitriolic racist declarations of any southern state, their involvement in the actual war was minimal and mainly involved providing logistical support to the real-deal slave states while making a tidy profit. To me a Texan flying the battle flag is just like a Swiss banker flying a swastika.

Agree with everything you said there. That... doesn't... always happen :)

The people that claim the US Civil War was souly about slavery usually like to mention that Texas had... my numbers may be off, but like 14 of the 15 sections of their reason for joining for issues with slavery.

Here's an interesting piece of history. Texas disagreed with the Confederacy's decision on freeing slaves. Not in a "How dare you, they are people" kind fo way though. Freeing a slave was outlawed in the South because it would allow slaves to roam across the woods of our nation like the walking dead. They would just show up on a doorstep or be found crossing someone's property. Seeing how many of these slaves may have ill intent towards former masters, it was seen as unsafe. Texas however, feeling very secure in it's ability to handle said situation, declared that a slave was property and the future of that property is up to the owner. "If a farmer wanted to throw his pickax or shotgun into a lake, shouldn't he be able to decide that himself?" was their thinking.

I hate double standards. Most of my family are all trash. All arrested, drunks, drug addicts, kids grew up to be much of the same. I was visiting a cousin when I still associated with the family a little. He had battle flag tattoos on his arms. He said Nigger as often as he could throw it into a sentence. Claimed he hated blacks and yada yada yada. When I took a joy ride with him in his Camaro, he turned on his sound system and he had Lil' Wayne playing. >_< WHAT?!

I tried rationalizing with him. "You hate blacks?" He agreed. "Would you wipe them out if you could?" He agreed. "Then why are you willing to give your money to this black guy? Your feeding his children and it's your gold that's on his teeth. If you hated him so much, why would you help him and his family like that?" . He said I just didn't understand; that rap was something everyone listened to now and that if he illegally downloads the music, he's not helping the rapper. I just nearly lost it. SO damn stupid. Same cousin... his favorite movies were all films with black actors in them. He wasn't a "wigger" for lack of a euphemism, but he sure surrounded himself with a culture that he supposedly hated.

Most racists in my experience are total idgets, regardless of who they are against. They always make compromises and never stick to their guns. They do it for a lack of knowledge and more to fit in with a group or to have a person to blame for why their lives suck. Phil Anselmo or whatever is the same. Plenty of stories I've heard of him doing drugs with black men. Its weird that this all came up when it did. I found a Machine Head album I had stashed away and was planning to do a cover of one o ftheir songs.

Agree with everything you said there. That... doesn't... always happen :)

when it comes to history you'll find I am way easier to talk to than I am about gear and guitars. I love history, but I don't have any emotions wrapped up in it like I do guitar collecting!

I am sorry for your trashy family. Apart from my mother-in-law (who I am still close with) and a few of her family members, my ex-wife's family is trashy like yours. Even the legit members who have not beat their kids, gone on SSI or had run ins with the law like the cop uncle my ex moved in with are rednecky at best. Someone described them nicely as "salt of the earth" not long ago. I feel your pain. Some of them are so racist they are offended my son has my last name because it ends in a vowel. People like this will needlessly fuel the ongoing custody battle with their limited funds and foolish encouragement, cosigning 'mom's' constant unemployment and dependency when I would be happy to settle with the ex at any time if she would move closer and get a part time job. I just kinda wish people like this would disappear. I never thought to have so much contact with this element of American society, my wife was estranged from the rednecks when we married.... I feel your pain.

I am far from perfect, but I am a fairly reasonable, compromising and affable sort of guy with few, if any, prejudices. People on the other side of the life attitude spectrum give me a lot of grief because I just don't know how to handle them.
