Equipboard Color Palette

Hi everyone,

We're in the midst of a redesign, and I'd love the community's feedback as we improve the site.

Today, I wanted to share the color palette we're considering and hear your thoughts!

Essentially, we want to keep the colors similar to how they are now but add some slight variation to give us the flexibility to make the site better featured with new elements. The site will still be minimal and mostly white and black as we know the focus here is on beautiful music gear. We don't want to distract from the visually interesting gear (be it in images or videos). Having said that, what do you all think of the accent colors?

Fun historical fact: The original color palette for Equipboard was inspired by the Gulf-liveried Porsche Steve McQueen drove in Le Mans.

GEAR:
  • EarthQuaker Devices Westwood
  • Fender '57 Custom Champ
  • Fender American Original '50s Telecaster

The Le Mans idea is smart and has a history behind it. I'd keep the stripes colors and apply a darker background color instead of the white though...

It's all about how they'd be used -- how much of one vs. how much of another, etc.

Do you have any in-context examples?

GEAR:
  • Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer
  • Roland SH-101
  • Roland TR-909 Rhythm Composer

I'd keep the exact same configuration with dark grey background instead of white and white letters instead of black.

It's cool you're not straying too far from the original palette. Accent1 is considerably more saturated than McQueen's Le Mans colors and on my phone seems to be warmer as well, containing some yellow. As Pkennethk said, it's going to depend on layout and context. As your designer points out in her notes, orange can be hard to work with. The current layout uses the orange sparingly against a very cool and subdued blue and it does its job against that blue and all this darn white. I think the baby blue iyou currently have is awesome, like daphne blue :) don't ditch it outta hand... use more of it!

I'm getting excited to see how you repurpose the color scheme now.

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

Well I like the white and especially how the gear stands out against it. It's pleasing to me when I submit a gear pic that conforms with the white background aesthetic. It's not hard to do and it feels like I've contributed a little extra when it all matches.

As it stands now I think the limited colour palette is what gives Equipboard its signature look and I think it's important not to break the brand. For me this all works really well as is so I'd hope you'll not stray too radically from this original and distinctive look.

Overall I like the colour selection in the example picture. it's just the purple that jars a bit so I'd offer the darker shade of egyptian blue as an alternative suggestion to complement the turquoise.

Doh! - now that I'm hovering the cursor over links, on my browser it looks like those colours are in the palette already! 🤦 What can I say? I'm a fan of it all as is.

GEAR:
  • Epiphone Casino Coupe
  • Pignose "Legendary" 7-100
  • Hohner Marine Band 1896 Diatonic Harmonica

Thank you all for your feedback. I know evaluating color schemes in a vacuum is difficult, but I appreciate you all giving me your opinion. It won't be too far off from Equipboard's current palette, but it is still nice to get the community's gut check.

I look forward to sharing design mockups with you in the future!
