Gig Performer - live VST host

I added an item request on the page 69 : https://equipboard.com/forums/general/topics/post-your-item-add-requests-here/posts/new?quote=true&reply_to_id=29463

But also want to present a little bit about Gig Performer, maybe people here are not familiar with it. Gig Performer is an audio plugin host dedicated to live performing musicians, but is used to many other use cases where a live and stabile setups are crucial (radio/TV broadcasting, live streaming, FoH, etc).

In the guitar world, Gig Performer allows you to host your favorite guitar plugins (S-Gear, Neural DSP, Overloud TH-U, ML Sound LAB, ...) and connect them easily and freely in any order you want. It is equipped with bunch of features and focused on live performer's needs.

Just like early software adopters, such as Dino Cazares, many guitarist either gig or rehearse with software setups built around Gig Performer. On the GP forum, there are many stories and examples of these setups, such as: https://community.gigperformer.com/t/using-gp-to-create-an-unlimited-guitar-modeller/15978 https://community.gigperformer.com/t/cameron-winters-vesser-atonian/13953

https://community.gigperformer.com/t/the-virtual-pedalboard-hits-the-stage/7563

A famous heavy metal Musician Chris Broderick mentioned on his Instagram page that "in all reality my super secret rig is just a computer running Gig Performer!". (source: https://www.instagram.com/tv/CVTO37lF3DD/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link )

I just saw that you're up to 24 "Artists who use this" for Gig Performer. Congrats :)

All those recent sightings pushed Gig Performer's ranking to #11 in DAWs... you're now ranked ahead of Garage Band and Nuendo... not bad at all.

Thanks. When I tried to add some people I stumbled upon this error:

"1 error: Artist name is already in use or unavailable. [email protected] if you need help."

I wanted to add, for example, Peter Claes, a well-known audio engineer from Belgium.

I'll have to check this out. My muse receptor is hopelessly obsolete and muse research is out of business... and it w as s always a pain to transport what amounted to a rack mounted pc around just for the negligible latency that my current laptop and interfaces are now perfectly capableof providing with a well programmed host.

There's so much fantastic software I keep meaning to try but never get around to it because my studio is so frickin analog. Even when I'm hybrid mixing it takes me forever to try a new plugin. There's stuff that came with my DAWs I've never even opened! Last week I opened a an eq in the latest cubase I never knew existed but it's apparently been there for years. It took me forever to fool with Sound Radix stuff. Totally mindblowing phase alignment and this brilliant eq that can track note changes and automatically move your cuts and boosts with the music. Dynamic EQ eat your heart out... that said I'm not getting rid of my 1081s.

Thank you for reporting this. I've got an internal thread with the Admins going re: this same issue. It doesn't seem like it's something that will be a quick fix, so I thank you for your patience in advance.

Please don't mistake my quasi-corporate tone as indication that I work for or represent the opinions of Equipboard, I'm just a volunteer like most any moderator anywhere, but I will let you know if I hear anything.

As you come across these artist names that are unavailable, please keep a record of their names, if you can. I will (eventually) start a new public thread for this issue, to keep this upbeat Gig Performer thread on-topic.

OMG I totally forgot the Muse Receptor ever existed. It's been a minute since I've seen one of those blue-steel beauties.

I'm sure Nemanja has more than a few customers who are former Receptor loyalists.

Muse Receptor was a thing back then.

Many people were Brainspawn Forte users, a VST host that is now abandonware.

@pkennethk Thank you very much! :)

I remember brainspawn. Never tried it. I was still into the receptor at the time. I had an attitude that anything good enough for depeche mode to use on the road was good enough for me. But I haven't turned my receptor on since the pandemic.

I have some question ls about gig performer. Can it sync to an external midi clock? Can it host fl studio as a plugin via rewire?

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

Yes, it can sync to an external MIDI clock. Ableton Link is also supported.

Rewire? That was discontinued 4 years ago. Anyways, if an application is also available as VST/VST3 or AudioUnit (Mac only), such as FL Studio or Reason, yes, Gig Performer can host it without any problems :)

Rewire was the wrong term. FL studio has a vst plugin version ove used since rewire went out, but I'm set in my ways and still say 'rewire'. I was just thinking about using it when I run out of hardware sequencers but I need a host that takes external clock because I'm not the master clock in this scenario.

My muse receptor is hopelessly obsolete and muse research is out of business

So I'm one of the developers of Gig Performer --- I did own two Muse Receptors back in the day - it was a rather clever idea but stymied by issues around VST licensing protection that made it very difficult to install many plugins.

Interestingly, we've seen quite a few ex-Receptor users join the GP ranks over the last few years.

Good to have you here, dhj.

I'm imagining the challenges you guys must have had to plow through to host all these different plugin formats reliably... pretty incredible.

AOK if you'd rather not answer in public, but are you utilizing the JUCE framework in your day to day?

I know you offer JUCE templates for those looking to make GP extensions, just curious if you also use it in-house.

Yes, we are using JUCE, albeit heavily modified in places to fix some critical bugs in that framework

As I read more about Gig Performer, it's becoming clear that you and Mr. Djogo are individuals who (pardon the expression) do not @#$% around.

Given the seriousness of your credentials and the difficulty of the task at hand, it speaks highly of JUCE that any part of it would pass muster.

The original developer of JUCE, Jules Storer, did a fantastic job with it, no question. He really thought through everything astonishingly thoroughly and build an incredibly powerful library.

Deskew Technologies released Gig Performer 5

Principal among the new features in Gig Performer 5 is GP Relayer, an exciting new plugin that provides the easiest way to share audio and MIDI between Gig Performer and your favorite DAW. Simply insert one or more of these plugins into your DAW and one or more into Gig Performer, and you’re ready to move audio and MIDI data back and forth seamlessly. You can directly record high-quality, low-latency audio from Gig Performer for your next album. Alternatively, stream your DAW’s proprietary plugins’ sounds and MIDI effects back into Gig Performer for an unparalleled live performance experience. GP Relayer supports up to 10 relays simultaneously.

The Wiring Activity view displays connections as color-coded virtual MIDI and audio wires when any note is played, helping you to quickly understand and correct your audio and MIDI flow and audio levels. Playing your instrument makes wires illuminate to visualize signal levels — “Green” indicates that your levels are OK, “Yellow” indicates that your levels are getting a little high, and “Red” means that your signal is running hot. Is a particular sound effect only coming out of one channel? Wiring Activity also reveals where the signal is broken so you can quickly and easily fix it.

Ideal for external gear integration and internal channel reconfiguration, the MIDI Rechannelizer is a powerhouse in flexible channel rerouting, enhancing your ability to manipulate and streamline MIDI flows. Using an intuitive grid-based interface, you can easily redirect MIDI signals to and from any channel or send multiple channels simultaneously. For example, playing your MIDI keyboard on MIDI channel 1 will send multiple copies of the MIDI message on four different channels to your external hardware and multi-timbral software synths.

MIDI Chord Maker lets you create complex chords using different sounds or block unwanted notes in a performance simply by playing a single key on your keyboard. For example, now you can simultaneously perform bass, strings and choir, each part using different chords in different inversions, all with one finger on one hand, thus freeing up your other hand to perform a dedicated piano part. Chord Maker features MIDI learn capabilities to speed up your workflow when you map notes to chords.

The Envelope Follower plugin lets you use audio volume to control envelope parameters in real-time—for example, wah-wah effects, which are particularly useful for guitarists. Or, if you wish to talk while playing music, Envelope Follower can produce MIDI messages that can control ducking, automatically lowering the music volume as you speak. Using widgets, you can use audio volume to virtually control any parameter within your setup.

Gig Performer’s Streaming Audio File Player has been enhanced with new Stretch and Transpose capabilities. It lets you flexibly and quickly tweak your audio tracks—speed them up, slow them down, or change the pitch—to fit any live performance or rehearsal scenario. These settings are stored and recalled as part of GP User presets, particularly useful when using backing tracks with a singer who requires a transposed song pitch.

The new Global Rackspace MIDI feature allows you to centralize your MIDI effects, key splits and transpositions in the Global Rackspace. Similar to how Global blocks have been used to send audio in Gig Performer 4, this new update allows you to send a stream of MIDI to and from the Global Rackspace as desired, streamlining your MIDI processing.

The MIDI Transposer plugin is a convenient, quick way to transpose note and polyphonic aftertouch messages as messages pass through the Wiring view. It is very useful for quickly changing the key of a MIDI sequence, and you can insert multiple Transposer plugins to create harmonic variations.

Song Part Actions allow you to define multiple actions to be triggered automatically whenever a song part is selected. Use this feature to send any MIDI messages to hardware, send OSC messages to remote devices for selecting videos or even invoke GP Script functions.
