Posting lots of DIY projects-How should I enter stuffs? (Thanks BOOM)

I've got Mics, guitars, etc. I've built or made myself- What's the best way to post/list this stuffs so as not to clutter the site? Several of my most often used gear/instruments are things I built myself or in conjunction w/ kindred friends tho I haven't added them cuz I'm not sure the best method.

User BOOM Suggested I start a topic so here it is- thanks for your input-

Yep. I thought it would be good to have all the staff weigh in on this topic because I was uncertain myself what G and Mike wanted in this situation.

I know I am not staff, but in thinking on a solution for this, I would probably suggest a group shot of as much of the gear as possible listed in the gear porn section and in the description a left to right system identifying each piece as we look at them

GEAR:
  • Fender MIJ Jazzmaster JM62
  • Epiphone Dot
  • Electro-Harmonix Sovtek "Green Russian" Big Muff Pi V7C

that's an idea

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

I actually have quite a lot of homemade gear myself as you know, Xaq... I still haven't added it all, but the stuff I have added I just kinda threw in like it was a real product. Who is to say I wouldn't build another Jim-treble-boost pedal for someone else?

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

Yep, I'm totally down for Jim-treblebooster. It'd definitely be cool to foster the DIY thing that's gotten enormous now. Circuit bending, Ardiuion/ Raspberry Pi stuffs, home made spring reverbs, etc. we all know it goes on forever.

A nice formal way of adding this stuffs would be awesome. Doesn't need to be complicated-just maybe a DIY tag but not before the gear category. So mics still are mics, pedals are pedals, etc.

It's a huge population that would be totally psyched to have a place to see & trade ideas & mods. in the already killer format of EB.

Until there is a consensus I'm gonna hold off on adding any of that stuffs. I'm still behind in just regular stuffs anyway but I'd love to see a solution to this-not just so I can add stuffs-I'm more excited to see what community will follow. Bring on the circuit bent Nintendos & the like!

I feel less precious about basic mods or straight up clones that are part for part copies of commercial devices, but unique stuff? repurposed stuff that is electronic but not designed for music creation that's been modded to make music? well, that's entry worthy

maybe I'll bid you one of my boosters if I can find more of the right jFets, texas isntruments stopped making them and a friend of mine bought the last of them from Mouser electronics to build mic pres. I guess I could change fets, but the one I used in the circuit had really get compression charater because of tis distinct slew rate when pushed into overdrive at 9 volts... maybe I could lower the supply voltage internally on a more efficient jFet though or just throw a 'brown out' knob on one to make the headroom fully variable. Hmmm, charge pump to 18 volts like a Klon and then give it a brown knob to take the jFet's supply anywhere between 18 and 1 volt? Its already got 3 ranges, bass, full and the one I use, treble....

I'm way off ona tangent but I'm going to have to putter something together... if I go with a more modern fet I can probably get the high frequency hiss to go away and then I can remove the snubber caps that suppress the noise in full and treble modes. Hmmm. I wonder what kidna semi conductors I have laying around in a drawer.

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard

"maybe I could lower the supply voltage internally on a more efficient jFet though or just throw a 'brown out' knob"

Fuck yeah you should. When I was playing guitar on the regular I never really got into many pedals w// no OD TB or Distortion (tho I bought a ton!) Super simple set up...then a buddy turned me on to his jfet stuff that he was building for a bunch of a bunch of B3 players and I fell in love.

Am I totally off base in suggesting that we could really grow EB with the formal and eloquent solution to DIY stuffs? It's all I've heard about for a bunch of years now and it's now gone crazy 100% main stream. I'm not a bender but I get super psyched by the projects, kits, wild one offs, etc.

Seems like a lost opportunity for EB if things aren't tweaked to foster that community. I say that as a guy without a single bent circuit in my gear. I wanna know and see more of how these things come into fruition. For example - Folktek would be an awesome add especially with the builders POV on what they've made.

I'm a bit off topic or maybe just getting fairly broad but for those who know the deal here here's an example or 2-

I've got a guitar I built from scratch-no kits just woodworking tools etc. It's my 1st guitar for acoustic 6 string.

I've worked with a buddy on a painstaking C12 mic that is the pride of my mic locker. It also is my 1st mic choice 80% of the time.

Neither of them are on my board despite being the most used gear I have-

What would be the best way to upload them & how can we design EB to interest more of the brilliant/crazy DIY kids? I'd love to see their crazy machinations and talk with them about it.

Yup, got the same problem. I've built about 10 pedal clones and I put a few on my gear page as the originals, but I was wondering about whether it would be better to post them as I designed them with their own artwork, especially since I'I've gt about 30 new ones on cue to make this summer... Or as it was suggested, maybe a cool new functionality that could be added on the site?

but the circuit is stock?

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

The circuits are home-made on stripboard, but are modelled after the original schematics. So apart from the offboard stuff, the provenance of the components and a few substitutions here and there, the boards are the same.

About your guitar... Got the same issue here. Jim suggested adding it as a new item with a personal picture, which I did, but I agree that we should get some better functionalities going about the wonderful, wonderful world of DIY.

speaking of DIY, how much do you all estimate it would cost me to build a TS9 clone?

about as much as buying one fo the cheaper versions like the Mini or EHX Green River Drive... actually I think the green river drive is a cost-cutting 808 variant.... the MXR GTOD is also a cheap TS9 or TS808 copy. Lots of options, kind've a waste to build such a ubiquitous circuit yourself unless you plan on modding it heavily

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

so stock, no intentional mods unless forced to it by component availability or box real estate? then it probably doesn't need its own entry untilw e figure out how to do like a separate homebrew category

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

That's what I was thinking till now, yeah. What about modded pedals then? I suppose an added volume control for some clones doesn't change much philosophically, but how 'bout phasers / tremoloes with added tap tempo, or a Klone with added Fat switch and soft clipping switch?

Yeah, I feel the same about clones/kits or common mods. Definitely more thinking of new creations kinda stuff. Clones & mods are killer, just maybe not worth a separate designation.

Didn't think of it till now but I wonder if we've got any code peeps cooking up home brew plugins...

If you want to follow the original TS9 circuit, with no added mods, this would be your stripboard layout : http://tagboardeffects.blogspot.fr/2012/02/ibanez-ts9_17.html I'd say if you're ordering on Tayda for example, you'd spend about a buck for resistors and caps, one more for the IC and trannies, 3 pots at 55 cents each, price should be checked for the diodes, but the board in itself would cost around or under $5, board and necessary solder included. As for the offboard stuff (the general box), if we keep Tayda as a reference, you'll need a 1590B box, which sell at $5 plain and $5.50 coloured (a deal!), a 3PDT footswitch ($2.50), two jacks, a DC power jack, and LED with its bezel/holder. So basically it'll add up to $20, taking shipping costs into account. Not bad considering most other pedal designs, unless they use particularly expensve components or a shitload of pots and switches, should be in the same price range to make! The only hassle is of course having to solder (not necessarily a hassle actually - you can grow to enjoy it as a kind of meditaion), drill the appropriate holes into the box (more tiresome), and if you wish, create a cool design (you can go the "hour or two on Illustrator" route or the "pop out a Sharpee route", both are different but just as great IMO).

for 20 bucks you can get a used mini, mxr gtod or greenriver no problem... fit he circuit were more educational to build I would say its worth the cash and hassle for the learning experience but its an IC pedal, you won't learn a ton about how semiconductors work
