What if an artist uses a certain piece of gear but doesnt own it.

What if an artist uses a certain piece of gear but doesnt own it? For example, Tyler Joseph used a motif xs8 synth but it is belongs the studio. Is it considered correct? If So why?

this always bothers me, from a user perspective I don't put stuff I didn't have at my house or studio for awhile on my list and I won't put a loaner on my lsit unless I made a recording with it that I put out for financial gain... I don't put microphones up that i used out of the studio mic locker because I worked there, I used those mics on everyone, but if I was working at home I didn't use them. They weren't mine, right? Nice to have them but I wouldn't spring for them. All the microphones in my personal collection have been carefully selected for price performance. So if you wanna know what I choose when its my money, its those.

But like adding an elam251 or u47 to Sinatra? On one level weird to me. The engineer chose that, those were the mics at Capitol. Frank may have had a preference as he got older but he wasn't known to bring his own in the Capitol years... on the other hand, knowing how they got that vocal sound? Its a SOUND. Maybe you should put the whole chain up in case someone is doing a crooning big band record and wants to buy the stuff to replicate that.

The whole thing's a philosophical minefield.

I can't tell you how many friends and clients (or clients of friends) have made commercial recordings with my 62 ac30 over the years but tis been mine and has been for 20 years.... not those artists' or the studios'.... so what's that about? How's that work on equipboard?

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

I tend to include an item like that if it ended up on a recording. If there is a verifiable argument that it was recorded, I would count it.

On the other hand, be cautious about live gear. Oftentimes, amps and mics are provided by the venue, not the touring artist/band. Repeat sightings of certain items on stage are a good way to determine otherwise.

My $0.02:

We are users cataloging what we own or once owned, based on the honor system.

The Artist profiles are a catalog of what that Artist has used, but not necessarily owned, based on reputable photographic or print evidence.

Two different contexts. Apples and oranges.

At times, it does seem weird to me to attribute something the artist used that belonged to a studio or to another artist, but 14 year old me would be coming here to find out what guitars and FX Andy Summers used on the early Police albums, or what Billy Corgan used on Gish... and I wouldn't really care if they owned that gear, borrowed it, stole it, or found it in the studio's gear locker... I'd just want info on what was making those sounds I'm hearing from all these BMG Music Club CDs.

Also, there is no practical way to verify what an artist owns vs. borrowed vs. used just because the Engineer put it in front of them. It's a level of detail that would break the fragile social contracts and unspoken agreements that keep this site moving forward.

So, yeah, if they verifiably used it live or on a recording, it's fair game as far as I'm concerned. Establishing legal ownership would be a weird and potentially counter-productive standard to impose.

Also: As users, we have the ability to create a separate category on our board for gear we've used, but do not own... especially when it comes to things like big consoles, expensive vintage mics, and speakers that cost more than a good used car. If anyone here had experience with such studio staples, and wanted to add it to a clearly marked section of their board so they could comment on their personal experience with such gear, I think that would be awesome.

...but again, just my personal take. Others will surely differ.

I dunno, that's the most sense I've heard anyone speak in a few years.... on ANY topic

I think borrowed gear does count if it was used, for instance Cliff Burton was photographed playing Kirk Hammet's Black Flying V, Cliff never did any Guitar recordings with Metallica so I guess that doesn't count. However in the case of Rush, Alex Lifeson used a borrowed/rented Fender Strat which he used to record one of Rush's albums (I'm not sure which but I think it was Permanent Waves or Moving Pictures and I think he bought the Guitar after the album sold) sure he didn't own the Guitar, but thats whats making the sound on the record, so if I was trying to get the same tone as the album I'd want to know what he used. So basicly Studio & Live recordings with borrowed gear, that gear would count in my mind.

Also: Do you think we should make a "Borrowed Gear/Rented Gear" section on artist pages? Maybe linkable to other artists?

My $0.02, which I happily invite you to refute:

We already have the ability to mention that a piece of gear was rented or borrowed from another artist via posting notes. If you know a piece of gear is rented/borrowed, and you link out to the artist they borrowed it from in the notes, that is crazy awesome... but I don't know if I'd want to see a separate category/section in the way categories are currently implemented... depending on your screen size/resolution, you can currently only see like 8 pieces of gear on screen at once... further subdividing the categories feels like it would just make things less readable/navigable IMHO.

I AM 100% with you in that the artist should have performed with a piece of gear live or used it on record or it's kind of a useless/misleading gear spot.
