What's Your Dream Band Line-Up?

Let's say you have 5 spots open and you can have whoever you want in the band. If you choose a person who can fill 2 rolls at the same time while playing live, then you can have an extra roll open.

What living people would you pick and why?

My Pick______________________________________________________________________

  1. Drums - Danny Carey of TOOL

I don't know if he could play things like Death Metal the way others do, but he's such a busy drummer and makes tons of fills. This and his ability to create and keep tempo on really difficult time signatures makes him my drum winner. I think he would find a way to make any genre's drums interesting.

  1. Vocals - Randy Blythe of Lamb of God

He's my favorite lyricist and he has one of the best vocals in metal. He can Growl, Screech, and do melodies all the while being 100% understandable. So many other vocalists growl in a way that you'd never be able to understand what they are saying. He enunciates every word perfectly.

  1. Bass - Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse

My absolute favorite bass tone and a very good player. There are bassists who can play faster or more technical and more of a variety of styles, but I don't think there would be many times where he just COULDN'T play the parts. His work on Frantic Disembowelment is enough for me to feel comfortable in his abilities.

  1. Guitars - Chris Broderick formerly of Megadeth

Smoothest, fast hands on guitar. Plays every bit as fast as Petrucci, Malmstein, and Bato but has a soft sounding technique that almost eradicates transition noises. He has one of the fastest and cleanest sweeps I've ever heard. He is also classically trained and is well versed in multiple genres including classical, flamenco, and jazz.

  1. Keyboards/Synth/Moog pedals/Backup vocals - Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater

The man who will tie it all together. Singing backup for Blythe, soloing along with Broderick, bass battling Webster, and playing intricate, unusual time signatures that harmonize with Carey. He's always been my number 2 favorite keyboardist until recently. My number 1 was Janne Wirman but, he is a one trick pony. Rudess shows he can play the simple, the complex, and use every tone, channel, and technique you can need from classical to progressive metal. This spot was really hard to pick because you can shift the direction of the band greatly with just this last spot. Rudess gives you more options and fills multiple roles.

Alright. Let's hear ya'lls.

Don't be shy lurkers. Post an opinion ;)

Vocals-Tim Mcilrath(Rise Against) - Is an amazing lyricist+Songwriter and has a large variety of vocal skills

Lead/Rhythm Guitar+Backing Vocals-Ian D'sa(Billy Talent) - Has a very unique sound, and is very versatile, he also knows how to play lead while making it sound like rhythm at the same time considering he is the only guitarist in Billy Talent. He also is good at creating guitar music, riff, ect.

Rhythm+Lead+Backing Vocals - Zacky Vengeance(Avenged Sevenfold) - Capable with harmonizing with the lead guitarist and is able to play rhythm guitar with almost a second lead role, he also has experience in a punk band

Bass+Backing Vocals-Chris Barker(Anti-Flag) - Never screws up, even while screwing around on stage, great song writer

Drums-Brooks Wackerman(Bad Religion) - Is an amazing drummer with a large diversity of experience in different bands with a diversity of sound and genre

Vengeance and Gates were the first 2 guys who's sound taught my ear how to harmonize guitar parts. Took me forever to discern exactly what they were playing to each other. Vengeance always plays a 5th higher. I dig it.

I was really surprised by Bad Religion. Not a lot of people are familiar with them. I used to have a car air freshener of their logo and people just thought it was an atheistic statement :)

  1. Drums: Matt Helders - Arctic Monkeys or

Ben Thatcher - Royal Blood

  1. Bassist: Peter Denton - The Kooks

  2. Guitarist(s): Dan Auerbach - The Black Keys

Matt Healey - The Kooks

Who's your fifth spot reserved for?

Drums - John Bonham, but if we are picking alive person, then probably Tre Cool from Green Day. Yes, Green Day gets a lot of criticism, but he has amazing drum fills in some songs, you've got to admit that.

Guitar - well, that would be Jack White, because he has some amazing fills in open tunings, and he does wonders with beatup guitar, whammy and Big Muff.

Bass - I guess, without discussion, Nikolai Fraiture from The Strokes. Why complicating since bass is pretty much simple instrument if played in way of indie rock?

Vocals - Noel Gallagher from Oasis. Yes, he sings falsettos and has amazing vocals even when capo is on third, not second fret on "Wonderwall"

Keyboards - Dean Fertita.

I don't know how you could pick anyone except Axl Rose as the frontman of any dream line-up. Greatest of all time.

I think his history would keep just about everyone from wanting him :)

  1. He cancels shows at a whim
  2. He's a jerk to his fellow band mates
  3. He's a drug addict and this has often been the reason for cancelations
  4. His voice is gone now. His performances at shows like the Golden Gods Awards show that he's not only completely out of shape (weezing into the mic) nut he cannot hit the notes he used to.

He's burned more bridges than the Apache.

  1. Dave Grohl - Vocals/Rhythm Guitar.

Excuse me, I pressed a wrong key. 1. Dave Grohl - Vocals/Rhythm Guitar. Even though this man has drummed on countless records with bands like Them Crooked Vultures, The Queens of the stone Age, Tenacious D, Nirvana and countless others and is known for hitting the drums as hard as humanly possible, I choose my idol and role model to be the frontman in my dream band with his raspy vocals and screaming abilities, I choose my favorite musician for my first spot. 2. Tom Morello - Lead Guitar/Vocals. Known for his crazy solos and experimental guitar techniques, Morello is one of the most talented people on planet Earth. From playing heavier rock with audioslave and RATM to playing lead guitar and singing a few verses (witch earned him the vocals position) on Bruce Springsteen's (who has a fantastic voice as well) newest album High Hopes, to playing softer acoustic songs with the night watchmen, his self formed, acoustic band, he gets my second spot. 3. Victor Wooten - Bass Victor wooten inspires me every day to be a better musician. If you haven't already, watch Victor's TED Talk where he talks over himself improvising Amazing grace on bass. Absolutely Beautiful. 4. John Bonham - Drums Do I really need to explain this pick? Just go listen to When the Levee Breaks and you'll know what I mean. R.I.P. 5. I honestly can't decide so here's a list of nominees Flea - Bass Don Henley - Vocals(/Drums) Bruce Springsteen - Vocals/Guitar Corey Taylor - Vocals Rick Nielsen - Guitar Richie Sambora - Guitar Joe Walsh - Guitar Paul McCartney - Vocals Bob Seger - Vocals Tomas Kalnoky - Vocals(/Guitar) Mike Brown - Baritone/Alto Saxophone Jim Conti - Saxophone/Vocals Timothy Schmidt - Bass/Vocals Eric Clapton - Vocals/Guitar Slash - Guitar David Gilmour - Vocals/Guitar Taylor Hawkins - Drums/Vocals Kurt Cobain - Vocals Eddie Vedder - Vocals Freddie Mercury - Vocals/Piano Brian May - Guitar Chris Cornell - Vocals Zac Brown - Vocals/Guitar

I guess that's it for now... Hope You Enjoy!

Oh, and the dream line-up...

Singer: Kyo (Dir En Grey)

Kyo, like and unlike Corey Taylor, can mix his his clean and dirty vocals in many different ways as well as being able to switch between the two quite well. I would have chosen Corey, but I believe an American voice would not be ideal for this situation

Lead Guitarist: Akira Yamaoka (He's the guy who did the soundtracks for Silent Hill)

Akira is very famous for his horror recordings, and his solos, while not comparable to something like a Van Halen solo, have the quality that I seek in this band.

Rhythm Guitarist: Jónsi (Sigur Rós)

Jónsi is a favourite of mine. His work with the cello bow makes him an ideal candidate for creating sinister atmospheres that strike anxiety at every moment.

Keyboards: Anders Trentemøller (Trentemøller)

AND

Drums: Trent Reznor (How to Destroy Angels)

Just listen to Welcome Oblivion, then listen to Into the Great Wide Yonder. They're two completely different entities, and that's the best part. When they clash, they'd be so different , yet it would be enough to create something revolutionary!

Herbie Hancock - keys

Jeff Beck - guitar

Ginger Baker - drums

Victor Wooton - bass

David Bowie - vocals

it would be so nuts, I don't think any explanation is needed

people don't know Bad Religion? They were HUGE when I was a teenager. Right in the forefront of the SoCal punk revival though not exactly a part of it... WOW

"mommy is on valium, so ineffectual..."

aww come on kids

I remember seeing they're album cover on billboards up near Glendale and past. First time I'd heard of Bad Religion. Not my taste, but still a great band nonetheless.

This is Texas sir. Most things that come from California are a turn off for us. :)

Number 1 complaint through Texan's these days is "Well ever since all those Californian's started coming over in droves and taking all the jobs and housing...." The idea of a Californian Exodus is not a popular one here. Texas has taken on large communities over the passed 10 years or so and our culture and atmosphere have changed considerably because of it.

Didn't all the losers from the music business in LA move to Austin over the past decade... that is the ones that didn't already move to Portland, I mean....

regardless I was only marginally more impressed with Texas than I was with California... I think I'm all 'merica-ed out and I am just going to pick up and move to the south of france one of these days, give up guitar and focus on growing grapes and blending a superior bourdeaux

Austin is a swarm of losers. People there just give up. There's a college there and so many people refuse to go. The cost of living there is going through the roof. I'm uncertain why this is, but even nasty, run down apartments are 1200 a month for a 1 bedroom now, even on the bad sides of town. You could get the same in San Antonio for around 600 and Lubbock for 750.

There is a huge population of musicians there. Some are good, some aren't. Nearly every corner has someone playing a guitar or at the very worst, bongos. For every 1 nice restaurant they have there's 20 that you want to stay away from. People try to keep a woodstock vibe going there. I think it's like Neverland. Children go there and never grow up.

California is kinda the same, but only in the big cities. All the smaller neighbourhoods are actually very nice, and the colleges here are top notch.

Except for the high schoolers.

A good chunk of 'em can go to Hell for all I care. But just a chunk.
