I usually only normal my patch points to and from my console inserts in the studio, the patchbays that have outboard gear are set to open so there's no connection between in and out, but if you don't normal your insert patchbays you'll need to hav a cable going from send to receive when there's nothing in the chain or the connection will be broken from the line amp to the EQ....

so there's what normal means in the studio and this remains true even when your wife is there, like Ohm's law, certain facts are facts regardless of spousal proxmity
