Your Favorite Non Documentary Musical Movies

This is my list of my favorite non documentary musical movies:

  1. School of Rock: the 1st musical movie I ever seen, suddenly in love with the cute bass player. It's a funny movie, I remembered the line that Jack Black's said "would you tell Picasso to sell one of his guitars?". I have a lot of fun watching this and never getting bored watch it again anytime they played it on tv. My favorite OST: School of Rock

  2. Ray: this movie told me the other side of Ray Charles. Jamie Foxx was great as Ray Charles and the story is good. My favorite OST: Georgia on My Mind

  3. The Blues Brothers: actually, some part of the storye kinda "meh" while the musical performances were great. I love when they played Solomon Burke's Everybody Needs Somebody. My favorite OST: Everybody Needs Somebody

  4. Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad: it's a Japanese movie based on a manga with the same name. The movie's kinda creepy because they're doing something idiot for some scene. But it's like you watching your own life movie (especially if you read the manga, it always give me a goosebumps). My favorite OST: Evolution

  5. Once: the movie were great, the soundtrack were good. Honestly, the best part of this movie were the ending. My favorite OST: Say It To Me Now

  6. Midnight Sun: a Japanese movie (again). The story revolve around a 16 year old girl with talent but has an incurable disease. The story were great, even Hollywood confirmed they'll release they're version this year. My favorite OST: Goodbye Day

  7. Still Crazy: it's a comedy about formerly hot shot rock band reunion. It's funny and hilarious movie. My favorite OST: The Flame Still Burns

  8. Nowhere Boy: it's a John Lennon's biopic, it's interesting watching his meeting with Paul and formed The Beatles. My favorite line was "this is my Buddy Holly looks. My favorite OST: In The Spite Of The Danger

  9. Scott Pilgrim vs The World: I know the movie's sucks, but c'mon, as a bass player I love the idea that the bass player are the lead role on the movie. I love the bass battle scene! My favorite OST: Garbage Truck

That's for now, if I remember or watching good non documentary musical movie again, I'll update it

in no particular order: Spinal Tap, Blues Brothers, The Commitments, Inside Llewelyn Davis, 24 Hour Party People, Velvet Goldmine, Last Days, Sid and Nancy, Sweet and Lowdown, Disney's Fantasia, Whiplash, Bird, Coal Miner's Daughter

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

I knew you would beat me to Spinal Tap...

GEAR:
  • EarthQuaker Devices Westwood
  • Fender '57 Custom Champ
  • Fender American Original '50s Telecaster

I was raised on Tap and Blues Brothers.... but The Commitments is arguably the best movie about being in a hard working band that's ever been made. LOVE IT, Commitments is funny because its so true to the life of a working musician with big dreams. And the Irish have a really sick sense of humor to boot that infuses the whole film.

I'm trolling the forum right now while my boy snuggles on my lap. He got his 2 month booster shots today and is feeling pitiful. I'll be allover this thread!

GEAR:

Mine are not in particular order too honestly. I like The Commitments, it's a good and inspiring movie. And for Sid and Nancy, even I like Sid a lot (he used to be my hero) the movie just too gore for me.

because its so true to the life of a working musician with big dreams.

You'll love Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad, especially the manga (if you don't bother to read that). It's very inspiring story

wait... Manga? Anime? nah dude. I have sworn off all Japanese comics, cartoons and music (other than Melt Banana). They need to stop stealing and mocking distinctly American art forms while selling it back to our hipsters. And stop buying up all our vintage guitars and amps and shipping them to Tokyo. God that pisses me off. At this point there are amazing MIJ axes that are genuinely vintage. I own 3 of them. They have their own guitars, lay off our 50s and 60s guitars Japan!

I think Manga/Anime was done for me after everyone decided it was cool to like Ghost in the Shell and all the sudden people who never read comics were watching the film version of Akira and talking about how cool Japanese comics are even though they ignored them completely in the 80s....

I forgot "Walk Hard: the Dewey Cox story" and "Cadillac Records" -- both solid films

Little Shop of Horrors

Hedwig and the Anrgy Inch

Spinal Tap

wow, how did I forget Hedwig?

Spinal Tap, all the way. It's hilarious, it's spawned so many pop culture things, memes I guess, for goodness sake it started turn it up to 11, the most overused, and cringeworthy guitar quote of all time! It's a timeless classic. I can't even make my mind up, what the best bit is! The really funny bit is that whenever me, and my Dad watch it, my Mum can't bring herself to enter the room, so she'll go, and watch notting hill 400 more times.

Tyohars, how old are you?

I got my kid a onesie with a picture of a fender amp knob that goes to 11 LOL

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard

Ah, I forgot Cadillac Records! I like Beyonce singing Aretha Franklin's. Why she's not singing something like that instead shaking her *ss and repeating the same lyrics?

Tyohars, how old are you?

  1. Why?

I thought it could have been a bit creepy you saying that that 12 year old bassist is cute is you're like 50 or something.

I thought it could have been a bit creepy you saying that that 12 year old bassist is cute is you're like 50 or something.

There are 2 girls only that became hot from School of Rock. The groupies. Probably the scariest one now is the blonde backup singer. Has a face like Spuds McKenzie

She doesn't play Aretha, Aretha was on Atlantic and recorded mainly at Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals. You're thinking of Etta James. Totally different person, totally different thing they do. Different label, studio and backing band too... different era for their heydays too. Etta WAAAY predates Aretha Franklin.

I wonder if Spuds is dead now. He would be a pretty old dog if he were still alive...

Best Concert Movie of all time: Talking Heads, Stop Making Sense Scorcese Masterpiece : The Last Waltz - movie about THE BAND

Most recent favorite musical movie: WHIPLASH! It's not for everyone, but it's absolutely addicting right from the opening credits!

Cheers!

I make a point of watching the last waltz every year... But the thread is non-documentary. Whiplash really took me back to jazz band competitions. One of my good friends got me to watch it because he thought the lab band director reminded him of me as a vand leader, arranger and music director. I never hit anyone though... and I have all my hair.
