bass pedals and effects

hi using a squire classic p bass and using dean markley helix strings trying to get nikki sixx's sound on some songs from generation swine the sound its near there but its not quite there a little something a miss un sure what pedals or effects he uses any recomendations out here my strings are 2613 light 40-100, tried through a mxr m89 bass overdrive any heads up would be awesome, thanks johnny

keep in mind a recorded bass tone these days will be a mixture of a miked amplifier and a DI sound most of the time, even live sound is usually handled that way. There will also be post effects shaping the sound, both compression and EQ, so what Nikki ehars coming from his amp and what you're hearing in a finished mix are 2 different things.

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

hi there thanks for the heads up so am i right in thinking maybe becuase generation swine has been a digital recording for the album its more because of the higher end recording equipment so what i am getting out of the bass is more than likely true to life ? thanks have a Great evening johnny

i just found out what i am missing from the sound a guy from boston told me nikki used throughout the generation swine recording it was mxr m89 bass overdrive, so gonna do a hunt about for one

get bass overdrive and play with yr knobs! never listened to this specific album but generally 80s rock had a lot of power in the bass's mids and the guitars were hella scooped. so maybe try that on yr EQ.
