Bass VIs

Anybody tried one; opinions?

I did the other day, and its safe to say its odd really, I wasn't quite sure what to do, as you can't play bass stuff on it, the string spacing is too bad for good slap, or regular finger picking, and you can't really play guitar stuff either, chords sound muddy, and leads are just a little too low.

Also what do you make of this http://www.music-man.com/instruments/guitars/silhouette-bass Never really seen one, or heard of it, so is it just another bass vi style thing.

I haven't seen this used very often, but here are the few videos in which i've seen it.

I think I was able to get my hands on one many months back, and you're right. It's definitely an odd breed. I'd love to get one.

I'd say Ibanez beat them to it with the SRC6. My friend changed the gauges and tuning and plays an SRC6 as an electric guitar now. Not my cup of tea. I was really disapointed in it's feel.

Are you asking about 6 string basses in general?

Nooo, he means the Fender Bass VI. Basically this:

On a side note, that Music Man is beautiful. Never seen it before, and i'm not in favour of most Music Man guitars. That may be the exception.

the bass vi was huge in the 80s... the cure, joy division, the church and aerosmith (back in the saddle, anyone?).... I can't think of all the notable users of the era off the top of my head but they were many. The bass iv never caught on so it was a cheap way to get new sounds back then. Original examples were plentiful. When the bass iv was new there were a lot of nashville productions that used them like a baritone too. No one's sure if Glenn Campbell used it for Wichita Lineman and Galveston or if he used a dan-o shorthorn (hes been seen performing those songs live with both), but my money's on the Fender.

but the 6 string bass has never been incredibly popular.

also, the new bass vi is all wrong, it lacks a lot of the coolness of the original like the uniquely designed pickups and awesome switching like a jaguar plate with 4 switches.... cool
