best shred pickups

i am starting to get into playing metal leads and want a new tone just for that. what pickups should i get for the bridge?

I'm just gonna to ask a few questions to kinda get a feel for what kind of sound you want:

Single-Coil or Humbucker?

What specific genre of metal are you playing?

What band sounds closest to the sound your looking for?

Any preferred brands?

And is this exclusively a metal guitar or do you play other genres?

GEAR:
  • Washburn T-24 Taurus Bass
  • Gibson EB-3
  • Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro Koa - Limited Edition

i would want a dimarzio humbucker, probably something that is close to steve vai tone

The first thing that came to my mind was the DiMarzio Utopia Pickups, since they are literally designed in collaboration with Steve Vai, and are used in his Ibanez PIAs. However, even without the (fantastic looking) pickup covers, they can still be a bit pricey. The DiMarzio Evolution's are what Vai uses in his JEM7VP, and the DiMarzio Gravity Storms (kickass name) are used in the JEM77P. Both of those are a bit cheaper than the Utopias.

GEAR:
  • Vox AC15
  • Gibson ES 335 Studio Dirty Fingers Plus
  • Ernie Ball Power Slinky Guitar Strings (11-48)

Here's a link to the Humbucker section on DiMarzio's website.

DiMarzio also made signature pickups for John Petrucci, Steve Morse, Nita Strauss, Joe Satriani, and Paul Gilbert if you're into any of those artists.
