Best Strings for Harmonics?

I was just looking at Ernie Ball's website and started wondering: What are the most optimal kinds of Guitar strings for Harmonics?

When I say this I have two specific things in mind:

What's the best metal type or output level? (e.g. Nickel, Steel, Cobalt, etc.)

What string gauge/tension is better? lighter/looser or heavier/stiffer?

GEAR:
  • Washburn T-24 Taurus Bass
  • Gibson EB-3
  • Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro Koa - Limited Edition

Are we talking about pinch harmonics? Cobalt or other high output strings are probably going to be best but string gauge is probably irrelevant. The main thing will be quality of materials and manufacturing techniques which will affect harmonic content of the strings themselves and also pickups will affect how well the harmonics of the strings are picked up and reproduced by the amp but for pinch harmonics cobalt will probably make them scream better as more output but the biggest thing will be technique and skill when it comes to pinch harmonics.

GEAR:
  • Harley Benton TE-40 Deluxe
  • Bugera Vintage V22HD 22W Tube Guitar Amp Head
  • Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro

Pinch Harmonics wern't exactly what I had in mind, and I don't even want to start asking about pickups yet... I do however belive the string gauge is relevent, I was playing my Tele the other day (unplugged) strung with the Dunlop Rev. Willie Guitar strings (7-38s) and noticed the harmonic response was terrible, I figured it was either the metal type (Nickel I think) or the way I play (I usually use around 13-56s). Aswell when I think of it, it seems like thicker strings would have more material to create the harmonic, and the higher string tension would create more sustain, I don't know though... I do agree with your idea though, I do belive Cobalt or M-Steel would probably respond better.

GEAR:
  • Washburn T-24 Taurus Bass
  • Gibson EB-3
  • Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro Koa - Limited Edition

the strings you feel most comfortable playing on are the best choice for every application... but what do I know?

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

D'addario NYXL's, hands-down. I've actually done an AB testing of this on YouTube and the difference is night and day - the construction of the strings is better so they last longer than regular strings, and the harmonic response is like no other.

Watch this video that I made on YouTube a few years ago and you'll see what I mean. Bear in mind you may want to use headphones or good quality studio monitors to really hear the difference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2MMmy5YJy4

  • Ibanez RG652FX
  • Ibanez S521-MOL
  • Blank slot
