Changing Signal Chaining on the fly?

Hi guys, recently bought a Line6 DL4 and it's presented me with an issue of where to put it in my chain. I want to run it after my shimmer reverb so I can loop and reverse loop the shimmer, but I also want the shimmer after the dl4 so I can volume swell into it! Are there any (budget) ABY switches or line selectors out there that will let me switch which pedal comes first out of the two?

Look into loop switchers that offer matrix routing options. Best candidates are Boss ES-8, Morningstar ML10X (basically a poor man's Sound Sculpture Switchblade), or RJM Mastermind PBC-6X.

Either that, or secure a second Line 6 DL4 and have that placed after the shimmer reverb.

GEAR:
  • Ibanez RG652FX
  • Ibanez S521-MOL

The es-8 is the dream, but I don't have the money, space or knowledge of where to even start with midi. From a very brief google search, all of the others seem to be along the same lines. Another DL4 would also be awesome, but again lacking the funds and pedalboard real estate for that one.

Sadly, due to inflation along with supply chain issues, the entry fee of modern equipment has significantly increased. Matrix loop systems are gonna cost you a lot of money. Any chance you can save up for the long term?

Probably the cheapest and easiest route

Unfortunately, they aren't small 😂 I've just about fit the one on my board. I do like the idea of stacking 2 stereo delays though 🤔

I know it is expensive but it is well worth purchasing the PBC 6X. I've been using one for a couple of years now and honestly, it was well worth saving up for one. It makes your life so much easier. If you plan on using fuzz, wah, univibe or even multiple overdrives, it is going to help with flexibility and end up saving you money in the long term.

Yeah, this is one of those situations where if you want those extra features, then you're gonna have to pay more for the high-end gear.

Here's the thing - at the end of the day, you're paying for the craftsmanship and features. I've seen way too many youngsters constantly trying to justify cheaping out on high-end gear, and then wonder why their gear doesn't work in all of a sudden. If you're expecting cheap gear to give you the high-quality results you're looking for, prepare to be disappointed.

Parents have to break out of the "cheap is good" mindset. It's just not sensible to recommend Made in China gear and/or jerry-rigged solutions that aren't future-proof for the long term.

You get what you pay for.

Dude, I don't want and am never gonna achieve high end results. I'm playing a £300 guitar through a handful of pedal that cost me a between £40 and £120 each into a battery powered 7 watt amp with a 4" speaker. I could A/B test Styrmon blue sky and a Behringer digital reverb and I wouldn't notice a difference.

You keep mentioning "extra features" but all I want is just a foot switch to re-organise 2 pedals in my chain

No stress, dude is just going through his 20-40 year old fancy gear purchase rationalization phase. Itslike a guy who buys a rand new flagship mesa that breaks every time he does do a regional tour but keeps telling everyone mesas are the greatest and the only amp for serious touring musicians. People get this way for awhile, then they hit middle age. His comments are about him not you.

EDIT That said, the thing you're trying to do is not going to happen on the cheap with a simple aby switcher or even a boss line switcher ls2, you would need 2 fx units sandwiching your verb... maybe you just need a small looper for whatever you're talking about looping your shimmer? Or maybe just try turning your fx off for awhile and just play, then turn them back on and see if you still want to do the swell out front and loop the reverb stunt?

Wait. Howsabout 2 reverbs?
