cheap/simple bass rig

do it, say the boss bf2 or Ibanez fl9 Terry! I know you're going to and I agree! I played tons of gothy type shows with a BF2 way back when there were no boutique peals and no one ever criticized my Cure sound

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

I used a Boss BF-2 because the Cure used them. (Guitar one... NOT a bass one!) This or the Ibanez Jim suggested... the Electric Mistress Electro Harmonix is too wild!

The Flanger or Phaser... (sounds a bit more rounded) just fill out the sound when you need it. I hate to recommend Boss... I know it isn't cool with the millions of other suppliers out there these days... but the suckers do not break.

Watch some vids if you like but beware! the sweet spot for most flangers is from 9 0'clock til about 2 o'clock. anything beyond that (in the video) and they are just messing with you! This extreme ranging will overpower what you are trying to do.

GEAR:
  • Fender MIJ Jazzmaster JM62
  • Epiphone Dot
  • Electro-Harmonix Sovtek "Green Russian" Big Muff Pi V7C

I don't know if these will help:

Flanging on bass throughout Nothing Left.

Guv'nor on bass.. most obviously in Awaiting Yesterday and toggled on and off in Trip inside your Mind... which also shows some good punchy clean tones from about 1:13.

Just to demonstrate what I wrote in the responses above.

...there is a reason why it has not left my board since 1986!

I love my BF2 and I wish I knew what I did with it when flanging got really passe around 2001!

I kinda regret selling that FL9 last year too!

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6

i don't have an issue with boss, i know a lot of people do, i just wont touch their tuners

but since you and jim both say bf-2 i feel like ill like it and ill sample some flangers, phasers and other modulation pedals

the BF3 is inferior, just so you know, don't get a BF3 new.... you want the 2, it sounds good! there are actually a lot of guys on this site who have BF2s and many use them for bass. Its a sleeper classic sound

yea i was going to look for guitar ones i think both of you emphasized the guitar one was better

I actually like a lot of flangers better for guitar, but on bass? this is the one. I played about 100 shows with this in-line on a p-bass copy into a couple of B25s or a B25 and a Bassman50
