First Amplifier

My first one was a First Act combo. The model escapes me. Then I got a Fender FM100 head and the matching 4x12. The first amp I owned that I thought was incredibly mega cool, however was a 50 watt Laney Pro Tube AOR, the eight knob version. I miss that amp every day.

I briefly had a AOR head too, very recently... the version that's mroe like a modded JCM800, not the later channel swithcing extra features one you had... really liked it and I'm not sure why i sold it now that its gone... I also have had several GH50Ls and i can never figure out why I sold them ocne they're gone. Maybe its the non-JCM800 features that always turn me off in teh end but I cannot figure out what i was thinking. Then again I also don't know why I sold my 50 watt 800. I know I bought my band a van with the money, but still...

I changed the tubes, looked for loose connections, etc., had no luck. Years ago I had a shorting problem with my Crate VC 60 210 combo and brought it to an authorized repair center. It was returned with the same problem. Sent it to St. Louis for a factory repair, was returned with the same problem. Sent it to St. Louis a second time and the engineers looked at it and fixed it. Trying to get the Super 60 repaired seemed like too much trouble.

Most of what I do is just direct recording into the Zoom R16, so I don't use the amps that much. Seeing the used rack head for $250 + $50 tax and shipping was too good to pass up.

I bought a second speaker connector on ebay and connected the head to the 12" Fender speaker and to the 2 10" Crate speakers in the Crate VC60, using both combos as just cabs for the Super 60 head. Great sound.

P.S. The Formatting Help (in blue) link below the editing window, just says adding the url will embed the photo. I figured it out. The pic has to be less than 400MB. I resized it in Photoshop and now it embeds.

I was going to swap the round knob that came with the head with one of the Fender chicken knobs on the combo, but the stem is off by about 100 degrees, so the chicken knob pointer won't line up properly, so I didn't use it. Maybe that's why they used the round knob instead, or maybe they just didn't have a Fender knob.

St Luis music is nota reputable company... its a shame they now own ampeg

I didn't realize you had such a high res photo in your gear porn

those aren't chickenhead knobs but I think I catch your drift?

*15 Watt Peavey Rage * I got it from the famed Rose Morris in Denmark Street; London's Tin Pan Alley. It came bundled with a cheap Japanese Columbus Les Paul copy in black ash sunburst that I saw in the window and had to have 'cos it looked justl like the guitar on the first ZZ Top album I thought it sounded a bit rubbish at the time but actually, no, it was just my playing. That was way back in 1988 - wish I had stuck at it but I I switched to harmonica instead! I don't miss the Columbus but the amp was well regarded.

GEAR:
  • Epiphone Casino Coupe
  • Pignose "Legendary" 7-100
  • Hohner Marine Band 1896 Diatonic Harmonica

First amp was a 10-watt POS that came in an Ibanez starter pack. Even at age 11 I knew that thing sucked.

every time I look at this list there's more Peavy and the rage seems t be the king of first amps apart from young guys withs tarter packs... I'm nto surprised but I'm a bit bummed too. Maybe I need to start a 2nd amp thread?

im seeing a lot of people by me getting the 20 watt fender mustangs(like i did) but more than 1/2 of the stuff at our local shop is fender or a company brand they control so i feel they have an incentive to push fender products

Second amp was a Marshall MG100. Not exactly moving up in the world!
