Fuzz pedals

I am looking at getting a fuzz pedal and I either want the JHS Muffelata or the EHX Green Russian, the issue is from what I can tell the JHS is much more versitlite as it emulates all the Big Muffs, but the EHX is alot cheaper. I don't know about fuzz so was wondering you guys' thoughts on the topic? Cheers!

for the millionth time on this site the big muff and its variants are NOT fuzz pedals, they work like an extreme distortion with 99% of the clipping you hear coming from a couple of back-to-back diodes to ground between stages. Its note ven that fuzzy if you put it next to an actual fuzz box that produces its distortion with transistors overloading eachother and crazy biasing arrangements. If you snip oen pair of diodes you get a supa tonebender which is like the msising link between fuzz and distortion. If you snip all of them it'll act like a buffered 3 stage fuzz witha tone control, sort of in the ballpark of a tonebender III or Burns Buzzaround... but elss fuzzy for a few reasons. plenty of gain in teh circuit to fuzz it up, but the design is not particularly fuzzy.

Want to experience EHX's ACTUAL fuzz design frm back then? Try a Muff Fuzz or the recent Double Muff which is 2 Muff Fuzzes in one box. But the Big muff is not a fuzz. its really a poor attempt at compressor/sustainer made by young guys who didn't udnerstand how comrpessors work yet when they started it so they acidentally made one of the first distortions.

By the way, try some non-big-muff fuzzes before you commit. I've ahd a lot of muffs (old ones, recent ones, boutique ones etc) and I have to say they aren't very useful apart from the studio, though there are a coupe things that only a muff will do (I just don't like them anymore). But try some fuzz faces and stuff... for real.

Ok great thanks I'll try out something at my local shop.

if your between those id say muffelata, unless you can spend the money for an original green russian, but id say if ur dead set on a muff style fuzz check out the big muff op amp(ex- Smashing Pumpkins)

now my personal choice would be a Walrus Audio Jupiter (the v1 and v2 are both good) or a good second with the Wampler Velvet. I personally feel the jupiter is one of the most versatile fuzzes ever made and its stupidly easy to use and combines with other pedals well, my favorite combo is the jupiter with a julia chorus(i need to buy one already) but at the end of the day its your ears and your decision id say if you can go to a shop and try everything, you may find you like Fuzzrocious Blast Furncace or Death by Audio Fuzz War or Fuzz Factory, im not sure what the selection by you is like

If you have a little extra cash get the swollen pickle through way huge it has some internal trim pots so you can really tweak the tone and sound of the pedal.

Cheers for the advice everyone, I've searched up all the pedals and if a local shop has them I'll give them a go!

If I ever go fuzz, it's almost never a warm sounding one. I like the silicon chainsaw fuzz sound a lot, prime example being the Boss Hyper Fuzz used on Electric Wizard's "Dopethrone".

the boss hyperfuzz that's analog, the FZ2? its just a Univox Superfuzz circuit with cheaper transistors (and I think a an opamp in one area to sub out a transistor stage or two where the discreet transisters aren't overloading, not 100% o all the itnernals). To e hoenst I ahd a vitnage pink superfuzz for ages and even the behringer FZ2 clone soudns damned close. Any alter boss fuzz is either a disguised distortion and not really a fuzz or its a digital modelling pedal. Just saying, not implying that makes them bad effects. but eyah, you can get a million iterations of the old univox circuit or easily make your own with or without the original compliment of rare Panasonic transistors. Simialr circuits include the FY2 companion, Ibanez Standard Fuzz, Foxx Tone Machine (sort of) and if you want a super extreme take on halfwave rectified octave fuzz check out the roland Bee Baa, ampeg scrambler or fender blender.

Oh yeah, the FZ2 also adds active treble and bass controls, the third switch position disables the fuzz section and gives you a clean boost with active treb and bass... the extra controls are useful for taming the wild Univox scooped mids section (position 2 on the original AND the boss/behringer version)

are you a fan of any other 'stoner' bands like sleep or early monster magnet?

Sleep fucking rules

My band is like if a bunch of dudes into classic heavy metal got into black metal really hard, but then years later decided to pump the brakes and play stoner type stuff, but they just can't let go of the Satan and blast beats.

Mojohand FX El Guapo is an interesting fun I've seen lately.

I wnder what it is under the hood, all of the mojo hand pedals are clones except the rook... although the rook might be a clone, I just don't know of what pedal
