Ibanez UB804 "Upswing"

First off, HI GUYS! I'm still alive! This new job, while I have more time, I'm more tired than I've ever been before. And that's saying something. But gods, I love it. Good work, good crew, come home happy--so yeah. Anyroad.

NEW INSTRUMENT DAY! I just got the Ibanez UB804 Upswing electric upright. Not had much time to play with it, but so far, I'm really digging it. Was wondering mostly if anyone could suggest a good bow for it, as I'm completely lost when it comes to that sort of thing, but that's also one of the main reasons I bought it. Love the tone, love the feel, love the way it looks. Really looking forward to trying to record with it this weekend, health permitting (new job may have herniated a disc, and I absolutely have a broken pinkie, but those are stories for another time).

I don't know much in the way of brands, but I am aware of a few things you may want to think about when buying a bow. Due to the Ibanez UB804 having a shorter scale length than a full sized (4/4) upright bass, you may want a smaller bow (more in the range of a 1/4 sized bow). Next, there's the frog, which is the area you grip. The two "schools" of frogs are french and german, and depending on which one you pick, it will change the way you hold the bow, so pick whichever one looks or feels the most comfortable. Lastly, there's the matter of Rosin; a bow and a bass on their own will not produce the sound you want. Rosin is essentially old tree sap that you rub on the hairs of the bow, which, due to the stickiness, will help provide friction between the bow and the string, producing the powerful sounds the bass is associated with. Back when I played bass, I used Pop's Bass Rosin, since the generic rosin I was using didn't provide enough grip. In terms of the hairs, you're going to want to go for real horse hair, not just weird fake stuff. It doesn't matter the color of the hair, to my knowledge.

There's also the matter of materials, but that is an area in which I am not qualified to talk about.

Sorry I couldn't think of any specific bows, but hopefully this could help narrow down the search.

Actually fairly familiar with rosin, thanks to some violin/viola history (we don't talk about that), and my efforts at bowing a guitar (yay Jimmy Page). Looking at the style of frog, likely going to go German, as it seems like it will work best with the nerve/tendon damage in my hands. Could be wrong. May see if I can hold one of each style before committing to.

Speaking of rosin, I'm wondering why they haven't come up with a rosin-free bow, something that grips the strings properly, and never needs rosin applied. That'd surely be worth looking into, if for no other reason than the science of it. Hel's Bells, now I'm intrigued. May have to look into doing that my own self!
