Identifying Kurt's Guitar

I was lookin' at some Nirvana photos when I found these

I couldn't find a Guitar that really matched on Kurt's page (correct me if I'm wrong), does anybody know what Guitar this is?

GEAR:
  • Washburn T-24 Taurus Bass
  • Gibson EB-3
  • Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro Koa - Limited Edition

its probably a japanese strat knockoff modified for a humbucker... he was well known to like cheap strats and he would take them to have a dimarzios isntalled at a store in seattle before he had a tech

the bridge actually looks like the bridge on my washburn falcon.... maybe a Lyon by washburn of some sort, they did strat types I think, definitely made lots of pointy, poodle metal shredder guitars for beginners

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

Right handed guitar, strung left. P-Bass styled pickguard, edge mounted input jack and cheap entry level tuners. This guitar was probably not destined to survive the night. It appears to be shorter scale than even a mustang. I would lean toward those entry level kiddie guitars, were they in existance, let alone heavy circulation in 1991

GEAR:
  • Fender MIJ Jazzmaster JM62
  • Epiphone Dot
  • Electro-Harmonix Sovtek "Green Russian" Big Muff Pi V7C

Also looks like Straight-6 Tuners, Plastic Nut, single Volume/Tone knob and a Tremolo Bridge.

GEAR:
  • Washburn T-24 Taurus Bass
  • Gibson EB-3
  • Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro Koa - Limited Edition

I don't think it's been modified to fit a Humbucker 'cause there aren't any other holes in the pickguard and I don't think anyone would make a one-single-coil-in-the-bridge guitar.

I also doubt Kurt would have replaced the pickguard as he never really cared how his guitars looked and with this being such a cheap looking guitar he probably smashed it that night.

However if he took it into a place the guy working there could have replaced the pickguard and modified the controls himself.

GEAR:
  • Washburn T-24 Taurus Bass
  • Gibson EB-3
  • Epiphone Les Paul Custom Pro Koa - Limited Edition

so in short, "I don't think thats it except maybe it is." Look I've been in the store in I think Olympia where kurt used to go for mods and stuff. Not sure if its still there but it was a real place that traded gear and modified stuff in that era and plenty of guys like King Buzzo went there for goods and services.

but yeah, the thing looks stock on further inspection... a stock what? well, think japan, the bridge is the same bridge as a washburn falcon. look it up. That guitar was made by matsumoko udner contract.... they also made aria.

Hi, I wasnt attempting comedy. These are all features that I searched for on the quest to try and answer this for you, or to help you FIND the answer.

The P-Bass pickguard was mentioned because it was an identifiable feature not consistant with many stratocaster designs (perhaps Ibanez Blazer series is closest to that pickguard shape, while not being known for single humbuckers).

The position of the input jack was also significant as most cheap copies will follow the stratocaster design and mount to the body. This suggests a company/ factory that is either using telecaster style hardware or is setting itself apart from the rest. Washburn springs to mind.

The cheap tuners were an identifiable trademark of Asian-made guitars, with the pot-metal castings and housings being easily recognised, ruling out most American made instruments.

The body does not appear to be standard sized, it appears small on Cobain. This is another indicator that may assist your search.

I'm glad you mentioned the tremolo bridge. It is another piece to search for, very distinct in its design, not of standard fender/ fender clone design. Look for it specifically in decoding and aiding your search.

Similarly, your observation of a vol/ tone pot was ALMOST useful, but you missed the details. The vol pot is unique, low and wide, possibly bearing an insignia or design, reminiscent of gretsch stylings. Look for knobs of this style to identify a brand of guitar.

This also points to the humbucker, open black and black, not cream or zebra and not covered. Look for this too.

your straight 6 and plastic nut comments were not needed. I think you overdid it with those.

And finally, the right handed comment was because it was not a left handed guitar, so could suggest a cheaper company that did not do lefties. Similarly, Cobain was renowned for smashing black stratocaster style guitars at end of nights. It is reported that many of his finds were pawn shop purchases. The right handed guitar may have been strung for basic playability to get through the song before he put it through a bass drum.

I genuinely hope this expanded set of details helps you in your search. I hope next time, you might take the time to consider your responses when someone is offering assistance, even if it not immediately useful to you. The fact that someone took the time to explicitly help you should not be a point of mockery.

I'm out, said my bit, matsumoku type bridge

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

My apologies, I was not trying to make a mockery of you, looking back the comment did seem a little sarcastic though I wasn't try to be.

Also yeah, the Inline-6 and Plastic Nut thing wasn't really that helpful I agree, I don't know why I put that out there.

Sounds like a challenge James...

When COVID is relaxed enough to travel, gather all your native plants and animals and come on over for a deathmatch! It'll be a decent blue/ fight, we can keep going til your guys are cactused/ stuffed/ defeated. (as long as no one is rooting for anyone... thats's different here too!.. and before you take your jocks/ reg's/ shorts/ boxers/ underpants off... when I say we would be great mates... yep... that's way different here too... it's someone you could hang with/ be friends with/ have a beer with) I reckon my gang will kick your arse/ ass, until its a black and blue colour/ color. We aren't completely uncivilised/ uncivilized, we can sit down for tea/ cuppa... (tea is our evening meal) and scones/ biscuits (down here a biscuit is a cookie or a cracker) beforehand. Bring a bum-bag (fanny-pack)... btw over... while fanny is a butt for you guys, it is a vagina down here... and that brings me to Thongs..... everyone wears thongs to a barbie....(flip flops/ jandals to an outdoor cooking event/ Barbeque)

So if you do come on down, practice speaking australian. As a early years english teacher... the best way to speak aussie is this:

Take the first syllable of ANY word (Yes... any... even if it is only a monosyllabic phoneme), and add -o to the end of that. Sweet!, You've got this shit.

And if anyone else is reading this, i hope youve cottoned on to the fact that aussies speak shit and take the piss. (yep, they probably mean different things too)
