Is it possible to get the breed bass tone on guitar,

I know krist probably used a muff, ds1, or a RAT, on the track but, on nirvanas, breed off of nevermind, the song has this instantly memorable bass backing it sounds so fucking distorted and sick and I want to recreate that through guitar the only thing I can think of is having a gated fuzz but that isn't really the tone I'm looking for? Any help?

I can't comment on how to get that tone on a 6-string, but the original tone was Gibson Ripper > cranked SVT > overloaded Sound City Neve console. No pedals.

Earlier in that video, they quote Butch Vig stating he recorded the bass mic'd and direct, and for direct they used a modified Tech 21 Sans Amp Bass Driver. I owned a bass driver for a hot minute in the '00s, sent it back because it was too oriented towards that 90s distorted rock bass thing, lol. Sounds like the Sans Amp wasn't used on Breed though.

for starters, every bit of that studio tone is a highly distinctive sounding piece.... nothing sounds like an all tube V series head and the SVT is particularly distinctive does to its phase inverter arrangement. They're also chameleon-like in frequency response due to the unique inductor based midrange.... then there's the ripper. The ripper has a sound all its own distinct even from other gibson. Its part of that 70s line with the marauder and man was gibson ecperimenting on every facet of that line.... and of course, an 80 series neve and whatever microphone was on the fridge cab at whatever position and distance... who knows if they did a little epak limiting with an 1176 or something to tape.... and yeah, then there's the 2" 24 track... and oh yeah, the mix down by Andy Wallace, he mainly claimed to use what's on the console, an SSL G series if I recall, that's a sound. And the bass particularly sounds EQed to provide some separation from the kick on the bottom and the guitar in the midrange... if you want to get album exact live its just not going to happen.

But the core element is the SVT. You're not really getting there without a V series amp. A V2 or V4b may be close enough and cheaper.... but you will probably want a sealed multiple 10" speaker cabinet with no horn. I really think the sound of the SVT is the sound of 90s rock bass in general, there are exceptions.... you'll ehar the odd hiwatt or orange 200 watt head sometimes.... maybe a big sunn. But big tube amp is critical and that baxandall tonestack with active midrange will let you dial it in really well and color the sound with that inductor. Fortunately the tone controls of the SVT are common to the smaller V heads I mentioned. Of course all those amps use some oddball tubes. Good luck finding a 7199.... not even the reissues utilize that one... heh

if you're not a purist like me, maybe a helix or kemper would be more practical ;-)

Just wanna confirm I understand correctly first: you want to achieve Krist's bass guitar sound on a regular 6-string guitar... is that correct?
