looper operation question

I'm looking to pick up a looper pedal (probably either the DigiTech JamMan Solo XT or the Boss RC-3), but have a question that doesn't seem to be addressed anywhere. I've read the manual for the JamMan, and it seems as if once you record a loop and play it back, there's no way to stop it and later start playing it again without first going into overdub mode. What I want to do is select a stored loop and be able to start and stop playback of that loop multiple times WITHOUT going into overdub mode; I'm concerned that if I have to go through overdub mode to return to playback, there's a chance I might change the loop, when all I really want to do is start and stop the same loop multiple times without changing it. I know the JamMan allows you to change the order of operations from record-play-overdub to record-overdub-play, but that doesn't seem to address my issue. The manual for the Boss SEEMS to say that you can cycle between play and stop for a stored loop without going through overdub, but it's not explicit. Does anyone know if I can do what I want to do with either of these pedals (especially the JamMan)? Thanks in advance.
