Morningstar ML5R and Boss MS3. Is it possible to do?

Well, haven't found a way to make them work together. I've spent some hours into it with no results. Manual is ambiguous about explaining to make midi pairings aside from how the Morningstar connects with other devices. I guess it was mainly designed to operate with its own ecosystem, but I thought it was going to be not so difficult because its a midi device after all. Any help is welcome.

Well, I know MIDI, but I don't know much about guitar FX setups. If you have a moment, tell us what it is you want to get cooking with these two units, exactly (workflow-wise/routing-wise) and it will 100% trigger someone who already knew what you wanted to do to bust into this thread and show off.

Without even looking at the gear you have:

Maybe it's a channel issue. I find 75% of midi issues involve a mismatched channel somewhere, you might want to make sure these units are on the same channel or defaulted tosend/receive all channels... 20% are a send/receive settings errors, like maybe program change or CC messages are disabled somewhere (though not usually on guitar stuff) and 5% are damaged cables :)

Lastly, I hate to ask this, but did you read the manuals carefully including the specs section? If you're using 3pin minijack anywhere check the standards of both devices. The korg standard has been officially adopted by themidi association but theres also a novation/elektron standard hanging around that has signal, hot and ground on different pins. So using a mini to mini might not work at all. The right midi to din adapters and a real midi cable will be needed in this case to get the data to the right place.

Thanks for the replies guys. yeah, ive read the manual, searched for tutorials and tried to create "presets" as the manual suggests but all i can see is the small red diode light blinking (a signal of communication ) but no indication of change of state in the loops LEDs. I definitely think it was designed to work on its own ecosystem, so i will search for another product with easier implementation if there's no other choice.

There must be something you're missing, why equip the ml5 with a full size midi jack and not accept program changes? Can it store 'patches'? If so it should accept program change commands from the boss ms3, menu diving for the boss is in order. If you can't store patches on the ml5 then it may not accept program changes although you may be able to turn loops on and off with CC messages. The Boss unit probably gas sonefuddlymenu options...

thanks, i've actually solved it. It was a problem of communication between them. First, you have to set (in memory mode), each preset sees a preset from the Morningstar, so they call each other (to explain it in a simple way) and they change togheter. To make them go up and down in the presets saved in the Morningstar, the boss has to be set to change CC NUM function on 0 and 1 (minimal and max CC numbers) . It's a bit complicated to explain here but thats how i've managed to make them work.
