rotosound guitar strings?

bassist here, just curious and want to ask you guitarists, what do you think about rotosound strings. why are they not popular? we all know that rotosound is indeed the most legendary string for bass, but the charm of rotos strings seems weak (and arguably non-existent) when compared to d'addarios, ernieballs, elixirs or dr. and ghs. are there any specific personal reasons (feel, touch, tone, material, packaging etc.)? thanks in advance.

well i like them and use them but im also a bass player, i cant really tell much between brands if they are just regular nickel on steel rounds, and rotosound gives you an extra high e. but yeah i use rotosound pretty much exclusively all around, they are good

GEAR:
  • Fender Precision Bass
  • Boss DS-1 Distortion
  • Blank slot

they are also made pretty near to where i live so i like that

Have no experience with the guitar strings, but I use the bass strings almost exclusivly. Ordered a set of Roto-Blacks (12-60) to put on my Mustang (24"in tuned to D) so I'll tell ya how that turns out.

I think they are not that popular is likely because of two reasons:

  1. Rotosound (acoustic) guitar strings are not that easy to find, at least in Switzerland. You have to be lucky to find yours in a guitar store, because often there are no guitar Rotosounds. If you find them the choice is limited; usually they do not carry many different types as they would for de D'Addario or the Ernie Ball strings.

  2. The variety is not as big as with the bigger companies. In my opinion, there is an 80/20 bronze version missing in the 13 gauge. And often the mediums and the medium lights are missing in the guitar stores

You are way more likely to find them for bass or electric guitar than acoustic.

They're my first choice for long scale basses, to be precise, the '88 black nylon coated Rotosound strings. On the right bass, they turn it into a monster, with their low heavy thumping sound, while being much more playable than most other bass strings as well. For 6-string guitars I've never tried Rotos, so not sure how they compare, but for bass they are certainly one of the best (if not the best) brands.
