Thoughts on the ephiphone sg?

I agree with Jimmy on this one. Could be used as an awkward club to bludgeon people with, but good luck finding a spot on it you can wrap your fingers around :)

I wouldn't recommend the sg as a weapon. The neck joint isn't sturdy enough to survive more than 1 or 2 blows. If your victim has more fight in him when it breaks you will regret using the sg over a fender.

I certainly wouldn't count on a chinese made guitar to be a reliable bludgeoning tool.

I've had experience with the bolt on model and the one with a set neck but not the pro model. The set neck had a really thick neck and very sharp frets that should have been sorted during the set up at the factory. it also sounded very muddy even with the tone wide open on the bridge. The set neck was more less the same. the pros are meant to be better but I have heard a lot about them having dead spots on the neck and after the 12th fret getting a fair few high frets. I'd recommend just saving up and getting a gibson SG special or something for not too much more. the Epiphones are alright if you are willing to do the work and splash out cash. the higher end Epiphone Les Pauls are decent but finding a really good one is quite hard becuase Epiphone have shit quality control

In short, theres a world of good SGs at good prices made by gibson. There are also some decent 80s clones from japan that canbe had for about the price of an epi pro. Then you have my current production fave, the reverend sensei. Bang for buck there. When I bump into a silver sparkle sensei at the right time i plan to buy one. Either that or a vintage guild s100 or s300. But in your price bracket? Sensei dude.

If you want a cheap SG style guitar check out the ESP Vipers, they're pretty nice, for the price. Oh, and vintage as well, they make a mean SG. They have one signature ,odel SG that I quite liked.

I absolutely despise any SG. They have always felt like your playing a plank! I just hated the feel of that guitar. It felt very "flat" or something. But that is just my humble opinion. I hated telecasters in my teens but when I actually spent some time with one I fell in love with it! I thought it was an unattractive piece of plywood. I was wrong! Tele's have some great tone! And they are super easy to play. They have always felt "balanced" to me. But even still when I go into a shop and I pick up an SG I just cant get a feel for it.

The first time i played a ephiphone sg it felt great but the time i tried one in a used shop it felt terrible so I myself think that some are great and some are like jimmy said firewood

it took me 'til I was 30 to warm up to Gibson's SG, then I got next to the idea but had to hunt up one that suited me. Now I get it. Its less of a plank than a tele. But what's wrong with a plank that sounds good? I'll take on your tone with one of my planks any day, SG or Tele. Don't get me wrong, I like my les pauls and 335s and my strat.... they are curvaceous and nice But there's nothing those guitars have that the SG, Tele and Esquire do not. The 3 planks all play and sound fabulous.

but to reiterate, a recent epi anything -SG, Les Paul, 335, whatever- is an investment in disappointment

Epiphone hasn't produced more than a handful of decent guitars (and this by luck) since about 1997. Epis made in Korea at the Peerless factory are okay, 80s MIJ epis are usually good, but mostly you see casinos, Sheratons and rivieras, not SGs (Gibson type models made in japan were marketed as Orville, Epi MIJ was onlyfor epi models until the end of the 80s when Korea got involved).

Yeah, quite a few people like them. But I never could get into it. Im sure some sound and play great. But it just didn't have that magic like a Fender Jaguar, tele, or event a strat (IMHO). I know we're talking about 2 different brands. And I do like Gibson guitars but the ones I adore are waaaay out of price range. A guy in my band use to play an SG and I'd give em hell about it all the time! haha! But hey, HE loved it! It sounded okay. I guess its all about personal preference. A lot of metal guys use them Toni Iomi, Angus Young, etc. So Im sure someone will find them likable but I personally don't care for them.

Tom Petty, Mike Campbell, Jeff Tweedy, The Edge, Derek Trucks... I could go on.

But yeah, I used to think the SG was a pointy, metal guitar until I actually bothered to play some... its not perfect, but its light, extremely musical, has great fret access and the ebst heel ever as opposed to a strat or jaguar that have that stupid fender bolt on heel. If I wanna play up high I play my SG or MR1000

Also about the telecaster, it was the first guitar i played and i still play it at my dads home when he doesn't need it for an peformance. It's a costum build with a swamp ash body, maple neck and a rosewood fingerboard. About the SG, I want to get one but i think ill need to try a lot of different models before i find one with a decent feel (i just really like the sound)

Well i actually tried one with a decent feel but the next day it was gone

you were probably hallucinating
