Underrated guitarists

Let me know what you think is a guitarist that deserves more recognition. I'd like to know more awesome guitarists and so, probably, do you.

For me: Philip Sayce https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Js_wsXYpycc

without even playing it I have to say this... nice guitar face! hahahaha

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

Hahaha sure thing!

My favorite underrated guitarrist is Mark Ribot, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyhGNklqArU&t=320s

since when is Ribot underrated? he's much esteemed!

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

yes, but i see he's as a part of the inner circle of cool people, not as a legend in massive circuits or famous lists or coutndowns of the "greatest etc." or maybe im too newbie and like my mother says "son, you've discovered the warm water"

I guess he's not well known like Clapton, but elts be hoenst, that guitar god thing is dead otuside of the EVH/Yngwie world of mind numbing shred. Amongst musos be they guitarists or just fans, Ribot is very well known and very much beloved.

Nuno Bettencourt doesn't get the credit he should. He's a beasttt

not these days, but when I picked up the guitar as a kid he was esteemed with EVH amongst shred lovers.. his washburn signature guitar of the era was a really nice axe for the money

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

Robert Quine of the Voidoids... maybe not underrated by fans of that music, but relatively unknown to the world. And great.

Cheetah Chrome too... dead boys, rocket from the tombs

GEAR:

Richard Lloyd. He is not that underrated if you consider fans of more underground music, but still, he´s so behind in most of best guitarrits lists, and in my opinion, deserved more recognition. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlbunmCbTBA He´s lead guitar here

I hesitated to say Lloyd because he's pretty well regarded even by non-musicians.

here's Lloyd and Quine in the 90s: https://youtu.be/ELwRW_2cdBE

tone for days on this one.

and quine on lead: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-U2X2yHpOo

you could just ignore matthew sweet

Yeah I tought this as well. But I´ve considered the fact that he´s not on the mainstream scene like overrated guitarrists such as Slash or Eric Clapton (Not saying by any means that they are bad)

My vote goes to Eric Peterson from Testament. One fo the more underrated rhythm guitarists in metal.

I think that everybody sorta forgets about Adam Jones from Tool, he has a completely unique sound that I haven't heard anybody else try to copy, because they can't.

I don't get a sense that Elliott Smith is widely regarded here in the UK. His songwriting and guitar style keep drawing me back.

I also like me some guitar that's delivered raw and raucous. Bob Log III, formerly of Doo Rag and Fredrick "Joe" Evans IV of Left Lane Cruiser - spirited, if not sophisticated guitarists.

GEAR:
  • Epiphone Casino Coupe
  • Pignose "Legendary" 7-100
  • Hohner Marine Band 1896 Diatonic Harmonica

he's a big deal in the USA... and he's not the ebst player but he knows his music theory and really has songcraft

or had

That's the thing, Most of the people I considered offering here are great singer songwriters with solid guitar skills rather than exceptionally gifted or creative guitarists. How does one define under-rated? A lot of 'great' guitarists do their own thing very well without being technically in-yer-face-awesome. BB King comes to mind, and plenty enough folks can fingerpick like Mississippi John Hurt these days. Like Clapton said, there's one in every crowd.

I'd like to hear people's reasons for their underated guitarists getting a mention here. Elliot Smith, like you say, may not be technically dazzling but his signature style and creativity is unique enough that I'd rate him alongside Nick Drake. Obviously though I'm turned on more by gentle acoustic creativity/virtuosity than face melting Yngwe Malmstein arpeggios.

its a dumb thread, that's why I'm mainly piss taking

Don't be like that.

Ofcourse an opinion is very subjective to one's personal experience of a guitarist. For one person a great guitarist is one that is very technical and has a lot of speed, for another it's more about the "feel" a guitarist has and maybe for another it's more about super creative playing that makes a person tick. There's no real definition of a great guitarist, only our subjective experience.

You see, with this thread, the goal is not give some guitarists the stamp of approval. Rather, it's getting some names out there, that some of us might have never heard of, so we can see for ourselves if this "new" guitarist clicks with your personal taste.
