Worst guitars you have bought

i can honestly not say I've played a bad guitar when you factor in price, i kinda know what i will and wont like before i try something so normally when i get a guitar off a hanger or shelf i like them, also 90% of the time ill go towards fender, gibson, guild, gretsch & epi' etc I'm picky about aesthetics as well as feel and sound lol, and those help give an idea if my taste, i can say the two best guitars ive played are a Fano JM6 alt de facto and a 66 mustang and as for worst when i bought my acoustic i tried some ibanez's and was very disappointed, I've tried some mid range ibanez electrics and they were good but i didn't care for them, just not my flavor, and their acoustics were nothing close the the quality of the electrics.

This is going to sound like a dumb question. If someone didn't like the sound of a guitar, why buy it?

Well I can't speak for anyone else but I've never bought a guitar from a store before so my first experience of the instrument is usually after a UPS/DPD/FedEx guy has delivered it. The epi I mention on the last page was my first guitar which i got before I knew what I liked in a guitar.

I buy a lot of old guitars sight unseen too, usually with good reults

Yup. My first official guitar was my Hagström Tremar Super Swede. Other guitars ended up in my hands due to fortunate circumstances. I have to say... I do like the sound of this guitar, but I find myself switching to single coils more often. A single coil plus low gain makes the perfect loud but not gainy amp sound that I like. Humbuckers distort too quickly, so I usually reserve it for playing with distortion. I think, sometime in the next few years, I'll end up with a Jazzmaster and see how that goes.

jazzmaster singles are totally their own sound, nothing like them being big, flat coils with polepiece magnets versus the usual tall-boy type of single or a P90 that's big, medium depth and uses a bar magnet underneath

your humbuckers may distort too easily, but there's a wide range (no pun intended) of outputs in bucker world... Guild and Gretsch buckers are generally much lower output than even the weakest Gibson buckers of any era, much loser to a tele in output.... the PAF copies in my Greco are very humbuckery in tone, tight and controlled, but are no hotter than the early 50s output bridge pickup in my esquire, totally drowned out by the T-Tops in my SGs whicha re not particularly hot when compared to a lot of modern buckers and are way weaker than the smokin' hot output custom/hybrid pickups I've been using in my LP and Washburn for thick lead tones... so you may just wanna try swapping out for something weaker before you rag on buckers! I ragged on them for a decade but once I played a lot more variations of bucker I found a number of designs I like for different applications and finally came around to some really hot ones again in those 2 guitars I mentioned above. But most of my gibbies range in output from 50s tele to low wind P90 and do great edge of breakup sounds.... if you also miss the single openness, varying degrees of coil mismatching in a bucker gets different balances of single coil openness and humbucker focus. We live in the second golden age of pickups, there's something out there for everyone in every form factor.

I know acoustics are the easy way out in this thread, but nevertheless...

This guitar (https://webshop.cashconverters.com.au/thumbnail/425x260/2507171-segovia-sjc33e-acoustic-guitar-0.jpg) is a Segovia. I picked one up just like this one, but in a dark grey burst, one day just because it was there, it was 30€ and I must have been feeling pretty optimistic.

It is literally UNPLAYABLE. Varnish is all scraped up? Never mind. The fingerboard binding on the side of the neck is falling off? NEVER MIND. Because that doesn't have that much of an impact on the ease of play, compared to having the strings half an inch high at the 12th fret... Of course there's no truss so the only option would be to un-glue the bridge, sand it down a bit and glue it back since both the nuts are at their lowest.

I'm sparing you the rest... It still served me as a good lesson though, not to spring on every shiny new piece of gear you see in person before thinking it over rationally. I consider it a passage to guitar adulthood.

I bought burgers for myself, my wife and daughter yesterday for more than that!

Maybe use it as kindling and Barbeque up some nice burgers...

Or smash it Cobain style... NEVERMIND.

Epiphone Les Paul Special II. I was so excited when I first got it but in hindsight it had way too many issues.

those are pretty grim, yeah.... even for modern epis! y'know, its a shame that epi has become Gibson's shit sub-brand because there was a time when they were mirror models like or unique designs like the 60s coronet and riviera etc.... some of those solid bodies and semis were kinda like the Gibson models but with a unique shape or different inlays and fingerboard and with different pickups but still made at the Gibson plant.... in the 70s theys tarted sending them over to japan and they got funky for awhile with some bolt on garbage and then in the 80s they got nice again but lost the minibuckers and by the end of the 80s when I was getting into guitar they just fully became the low end of Gibson with less of the unique models in the line and varying quality throughout the 90s depending on the Korean subcontractor. Some were pretty nice, but many weren't...

Exactly. I've played some Epiphanies that are super smooth and well set-up, but more often than not it's just merely a way for Gibson to cut corners with good ideas. Their new '56 LP Custom is beautiful, but I'd never drop $900 on an Indonesian made guitar with shoddy QC. I'd rather drop that $900 on a MIM Charvel So Cal, or even an Agile and then upgrade the pickups on the Agile and still have money left over.

frankly, for 900 you can get an old Japanese Burny LP Custom copy (with a 100 bucks left over for a night at the bar) that will be super well-made, have the same appointments as the epi, older growth, aged in wood, a thinner finish, and some decent old gotoh PAF clones (that maybe aren't as good as the maxon ones in tokais and grecos but still sound much better than the shit in epis)... of course, with old lawsuit axes you have to be patient because not every good model will be available every day, but they come up frequently enough that I would never look at an LP custom that wasn't at least made in Nashville.
