Holton is an American brass instrument manufacturer founded by Frank Holton, a former trombonist in John Philip Sousa's band, who opened his first shop in Chicago in 1898 after finding success selling his "Electric Oil" trombone slide lubricant. The company relocated to Elkhorn, Wisconsin in 1917, where it operated for nearly a century and became one of the longest continuously operating wind instrument makers in the United States. After Frank Holton sold the company to employee Fred Kull in 1939, the brand was acquired by the G. Leblanc Corporation in 1964 and later folded into Conn-Selmer in 2004, with production moving to Eastlake, Ohio in 2008.
The brand is most closely associated with French horns, particularly the Farkas model line developed in collaboration with Philip Farkas, longtime principal horn of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, in the late 1950s. The Merker-Matic line of horns was later developed with Chicago horn player Ethel Merker. Alongside French horns, Holton manufactures trumpets, cornets, trombones, euphoniums, baritones, tubas, and brass mouthpieces, and still produces its original Electric Oil slide lubricant.
Holton instruments are widely used in school band programs, military and concert bands, and orchestral settings, with the Farkas-designed horns holding a particularly strong reputation among orchestral horn players.
