Rules for Adding and Editing Music Gear on Equipboard

NOTE: The guidelines on this page are specifically for adding music gear to the Equipboard database. For guidelines on submitting gear used by an artist, see this page.

Equipboard has grown into one of the largest music gear websites in the world, attracting millions of monthly visitors researching their favorite gear.

A huge part of what makes Equipboard great is its community-driven nature - anyone can contribute. But with that freedom comes the need for clear guidelines to ensure consistency and resolve ambiguity when adding or editing gear.

Below are the official rules for what's allowed, how to name items, and how to handle edge cases.

Disallowed Items

Non-music gear. Equipboard is strictly for musical equipment. Items worn or endorsed by artists that have nothing to do with music are not allowed.

Fully custom-made items. If there's no official brand, make, or model, it doesn’t belong on Equipboard.

Exception: Generic objects or non-traditional instruments may be allowed if they were used to create music in a notable way.

General Naming Conventions

Cosmetic variations (colors, finishes, artwork) should NOT have separate pages.

  • These differences don’t affect functionality and should be handled in reviews or artist submissions.
  • Keeping them together makes for a much more useful product page.

It's okay to include the general product category in the name. Examples:

  • ✅ Fender American Professional II Telecaster Electric Guitar
  • ✅ Pearl Roadshow RS525SC/C 5-piece Complete Drum Set
  • ✅ Source Audio C4 Synth Pedal

Avoid unnecessary marketing fluff in names.

  • ❌ BOSS HM-2W Heavy Metal | Premium Waza Craft Guitar Effect Pedal with Analog Circuitry | True Reproduction of the Legendary BOSS HM-2 Heavy Metal | Standard & Custom Playing Modes | 5-Year Warranty
  • ✅ Boss HM-2W Waza Craft Heavy Metal Distortion Pedal

Don't use acronyms or abbreviations for brand/model names.

  • ❌ Fender AM Ultra Tele
  • ✅ Fender American Ultra Telecaster

Guitar-Specific Naming Conventions

Don't include a guitar’s color or fingerboard material in the name.

  • These are personal preference details that don’t affect playability.
  • If you spot duplicate pages for color variants, submit them as duplicates.

Don't include the year unless it’s historically significant.

  • A 1977 Fender Telecaster Thinline isn’t historically significant, nor fundamentally different from a 1978 model, so both should be rolled up into the existing Fender Telecaster Thinline page.

Acoustic guitar tonewood is a legitimate differentiator. If a model comes in multiple tonewoods, it’s okay to specify.

  • ✅ Taylor GS Mini Mahogany
  • ✅ Taylor GS Mini Koa

Bridge variations can be kept separate when the manufacturer has produced distinct versions of the same guitar with different bridges (e.g., Hardtail, Floyd Rose, Bigsby, etc.), as bridge type affects playability, tuning stability, and tone. However, if a guitar has been modified after-market by an individual to have a different bridge, this should NOT result in a separate item being created. Instead, mention the modification in your review or submission notes on the primary guitar's item page.

Packs, Bundles & Starter Kits

Avoid adding packs, bundles, or starter kits.

  • These usually contain one main item (e.g., a microphone or guitar) plus accessories.
  • The primary item is what belongs on Equipboard - not the bundle itself.

Not Sure About an Item?

If you're unsure about adding something, suspect a duplicate, or have any concerns, post in the General Forum and we'll help figure it out!
