I also suggest equipboard brew its own beer... equipbeer, a boutique lager with a proprietary blend of unobtainium hops and leadless solder...
Hell yeah - Board-wiser, Beer of geeks!

Just a simple design mod - give the forum more prominence by placing it towards the top of the column instead of off the screen at the bottom. It puzzles me that I have to scroll down to find it; it's so easy to miss where it is. It kind of makes it feel like a secondary feature to the website whereas I feel the community aspect is equally as strong as all the gear specific features, perhaps even more so.

What string gauges does everyone use?
That Longhorn's sweet! I'd worry about breaking a horn though π±I remember Tom Petty using one with the Travelling Wilburys. What strings do you put on your Violin Bass? I have my eye on the Hofner Ignition Club bass which is functionally similar but perhaps a bit more comfortable to sit with.

What string gauges does everyone use?
well I've kinda settled on 10's for shortscales - 9's are definitely lighter than I care for but I hear good things about 9.5. as an alternative. Earnie Ball are 9.5 12 16 24 34 44 whereas D'addario offers 9.5 11.5 16 24 34 44

never much cared for short scales either tbh
So how's it going with your Mustang and Violin Basses then ? π

What string gauges does everyone use?
Madmen and Rocksmith Players! π± Those Neon's have since served their purpose and are long gone now π
I'm presently sporting some Rotosound blues (Heavy Bottom 10-52) which have been fine on my shortscale Mustang. I'm not sure what if anything the heavy bottom set offers however and since my touch has been getting lighter I now have a set of Ernie Balls 9.5's on order. (9.5, 12,16,24,34,44). I seem to have a particularly bright sounding G string so am still tinkering with string gauge and pole height in order to tame it a bit - still learning here!

The point of buying an expensive guitar?
@ebebebeb - Many cheap guitars manufactured today are consistently as good or better than those commonly available to our guitar heroes of the 1950's 60's and 70's. However some of us believe an expensive guitar will make us sound better, play better and look cooler than the next guy and some perceive a certain prestige to be had from owning a rare vintage or modern boutique guitar - ( just my tuppence worth ;-)
My favourite guitar tone puzzled me for a long time. I really couldn't figure out how the Malawi Mouse Boys achieved this totally badass sound! What was their secret sauce? a special mic; a crippled amp; magic pickups?

I can't even teach my cats to stay in the room when I play guitar let alone have them try to play.

ππΌ Are you guys able to get BBC Sounds where you are - loads of great programs for every taste - BBC 6 Music is especially good; there was huge outcry when it was threatened. lots of alternative/up and coming bands but I prefer the evening (UK) programs to the daytime which is more mainstream. Iggy Pop does his Iggy confidential... I'll put up some links for what hits the spot for me.

πΌ I've Died And Gone To Synth Heaven... πΌ
I'm not sure I've mentioned this here before but there's a fantastic series of podcasts on Spotify: "Planet Jarre" - Matt Berry interviews JMJ about his life and music. Altogether there's almost 3 hours of interview. I have to confess I always had the impression that the man himself was a bit of a pretentious bell-end but he comes over really quite open and down to earth in these interviews. Pleased to discover I was wrong; he's just super geeky French style!

...finally get offered a mint one after buying a pile of alternatives....
That's great - a great opportunity to declutter the alternatives? π² My OP-1 often comes to bed with me but I've even used it on public transport - How sordid is that ?!

my current solution is to stop buying stuff even if I get offered a helluva deal... unless its a bucket list item. I did make music yesterday although its not really 'good' music...
Yeah, my solution has been to put stuff I covet onto wishlists and wait for the deal to come round again as they nearly always do. By which time the urge to buy it has often subsided - Tantric shopping!

...the fact that is seemed to require Elektron-like levels of shift-mode memorization to get around struck me as counter to its overall image/reputation of simplicity, approachability, and playful creative constraints. The reward for that memorization w/ Elektron gear is a ton of power/editability... but the functionality of the OP is intentionally constrained in comparison... I don't know... I'm sure my mind would be changed if I lived with one for a bit... everyone that actually owns one seems to love it.
I have nothing to compare it to but the keystrokes to me feel pretty logical and intuitive for the most part. I guess it helps that I've long preferred keyboard shortcuts to point and click with a mouse. Once they're familiar it can be really speedy.

...my gear collection really exploded the last year and I haven't actually finished more than 1 piece, I get bogged down or lose interest because I'm distracted by new toys
That's exactly what I'm aiming to avoid. That and all the cables π±I worry they might be starting to become a phobia for me!

Limitations = creativity / desert island synth
My Teenage Engineering OP-1 takes me back to my RAF days way back in the 90's when I first started having to use spreadsheets at work. Back in my barrack room I had 'acquired' a suite of office software for my Atari ST in order to teach myself the ropes but it was wearisome trying to get my head around databasing and lookup tables when my time could be so much better spent playing F16 flight simulator, Battlechess or Marble Madness but I digress.
Where I got my best 'work' done was kicked back on my bed, watching Alternative Nation on MTV Europe and with a little Psion Series 3a propped against my knee. Another 'overpriced cult classic' this wondrous little pocket computer had it's own rudimentary word processor, spreadsheet and database. The software built into the Series 3 offered just enough functionality to do what needed to be done. Its 'limited' features taught me to focus on mastering the fundamentals without being drawn into all the distracting whistles and bells, option overload and decision fatigue that came with the fully fledged Microsoft Office suite back at work. It was a testament to the capability of that pioneering little device that I found myself more productive in my spare time, drafting documents, databases and spreadsheets on the Psion than I ever was on the 'proper computers' at work. It just offered a different, clearer headspace altogether.
So what has this got to do with synths? ...well nothing, almost. It's just that the uncluttered experience of working with such a minimalist device as the Psion convinced me that the OP-1 would be the perfect choice sole synthesizer for my situation. It does pretty much everything I can imagine I'd need on a desert island, or a boat, hammock, tent, or picnic jam and It doesn't intrude with excessive options or interrupt creative flow. It gives me an integrated synthesiser, sequencer, drum machine and recording experience without getting over complicated.
Also, I am so fed up managing my cable collection already.

I reckon if you have all the pro grade components already Jim then you'd most likely find the OP-1 makes a very classy paper weight. It seems a worthwhile investment for me as I'm starting from scratch with nothing else besides a rattly old 80's Casio attic rescue keyboard. I like the form factor and am old enough to relate to the virtual 4 track tape editing from my linear video editing days last millennia! Perhaps I'll share my perspective on the Desert Island Synth thread since that's the context where I think this dinky synth thrives.

40 years on I was both surprised and not surprised to read that JMJ lists the OP-1 among his top ten synthesisers. https://youtu.be/49rwrBc9gfM.

What string gauges does everyone use?
Who here enjoys playing both long and short scale guitars; do you use the same guage strings on both or do you go up a gauge on the shorty? Does anyone prefer certain gauges between humbuckers or single coils? How anal do we all get here?

What string gauges does everyone use?
Rick Beato has done a thorough comparison on the subject since the OP Does size matter?
and Rhett Schull does his own follow up I Was DEFiNiTELY Using The Wrong Guitar Strings
I presently have 11's on my Pawnshop series Mustang (twin splittable HBs; shortscale) mostly for a stiffer action/steadier tuning under my Action Manβ’ gripping hands! However after hearing the comparisons I reckon I'll ease back to 9's in future on my electrics.
I would imagine acoustics to be another matter with string gauge and tension more likely a significant factor tonally depending on individual guitar structure, wood composition and personal taste?

Rick Beato on YouTube - I could listen to him talk about music all day!
Yeah 12tone is great too! - but I'll have to check out Adam Neely - Thanks I haven't seen the 1979 breakdown so I'll look that one out as well. God I used to have such a thing for D'arcy floating about with her eyes shut in that Disarm video - So 90's!
Perhaps I should've titled the thread "the most rewarding/helpful YouTube channels for musicians". (and perhaps irritating)
I find Josh of JHS pedals quite engaging but That Pedal Show bores me senseless! Andertons is a mixed bag but Lee Anderton got a great interview from Steve Vai - they went deep! So I may well follow their 'Captain Meets' series.
