I recently acquired a Univox Hi Flier bass and I'm trying to figure out a range of when it's made. It has the decal logo on the headstock and tan humbuckers. Any ideas?

Yeah I guess I was expecting something kinda close to a blackface and all but just a little tweaked. And I'm considering one of those Music Man amps since I saw one for $450 at a guitar center. It works but it cosmetically shows signs of use. I think it's a late 70s model if I'm correct. Some bands I listen to use the 130s and I like their sound.

Ah, sorry for the late reply I've been busy with school. Thanks a ton for all the help and advice. I'm doing pretty well with it since I've learned to harness the sound a little by switching the EQ and not using hot humbuckers on it. Say, what do you think about the Music Man 212 65 watt?

I figured I'd replace the tubes in it and try running it through different speakers. It came with Jensen blue speakers in it. I was thinking maybe some Mesa tubes because it takes 4 12ax7's and 2 12at7's. I'll try all I can with it and if it doesn't work I'll just sell.

I just bought a Fender Super Pro (1993) and it sounds extremely harsh and heavy on the treble even when I roll the treble and mids back. But when I switch to the neck pickup on my guitar it's too muddy. I know it isn't the guitar because it's worked perfectly on other amps. Should I replace the tubes and if so what with? I want a good standard Fender clean with crunchy overdrive. But instead I'm getting too bright cleans and way too sharp overdrive. Should I also be concerned that the amp starts to break up when the volume is at 3? It's a 4x10 in case that would help.

Thanks man I appreciate the advice. This is a little off topic but on the amp thing I've been looking at a Boss Katana 100 or a Fender Bassbreaker 45 to upgrade to. Which one do you think would be better for the money considering I play the range from JAMC to punk? Or would you recommend any good used tube amps without breaking the bank?

Thanks for the advice. Any suggestions on what the bass, treble, mid, and gain settings should be?

I saw The Jesus and Mary Chain in concert recently and now I really want to recreate their tone from the Automatic, Honey's Dead, and Munki era as closely as possible. I've been chasing the sound since I've been playing guitar but now I want to get serious. From what I could tell, William Reid was using a Gibson ES-330 into two Orange amps which appeared to be a Crush head and a Thunder head. I've been eyeing a Shin-Ei fuzz wah and I'm considering getting it. Right now my rig is a solid state Marshall combo with a Big Muff, Rat, DS-2, and Swollen Pickle along with a Jazzmaster. Any idea how I can get this tone with my current rig like with settings and pedals? If not, what amps would be close to those Oranges or a Marshall JCM-800 (his old amp)? I'm not as worried about the feedback sound at the moment (even though I'd really like to know) just the guitar tone.

Well with Fender's new release of the Mustang Basses I may actually get my hands on one. I kind of like the P/J configuration because the stock Mustang Bass pickups sounded a bit weak to me. But anyways I see that instead of it having the original Mustang Bass bridge it has a rear loaded standard P bridge. If I were to get this, 1. Should I upgrade to a hi-mass bridge (Badass II) and 2. I really like the string thru body aspects of the original Mustang Basses. That being said, could I make it string thru and would it be worth the risk of messing it up for the improvement of added sustain?

Sorry if this comes across as dumb but what is pinning levels? Like I said I'm just starting out with recording and mixing and all of that so forgive me if I ask dumb questions. I also have another question regarding the sound. I have to turn the volume on my guitar down to 1 if I want the signal to be clean. I'm running straight from my Jazzmaster into channel 1 on the recorder. Is this normal or okay and if it isn't what's wrong here?

Before I get jumped on or called an idiot let me say this is my first venture into analog recording. I got a Tascam Portastudio 414 (mk 1) and I read the manuals and stuff but can't get it to record. I'll set the lines to record and the lights will come on and stuff and the tape will spin after I press the record button but when I go back to play the tape it's still what was originally on there. Can anybody help? Or is my recorder broken?

Dang. Do you have to pay a lot for them? And this ad was created and last posted on in June 2014 by the owner saying they'll accept the best offer. I don't know about getting it though because I don't know if it has sold or what. Here's the thread.

Hey I found one on there but I really don't wanna have to pay for an account. I guess I'll have to though. How much for one?

I've been looking for a MIJ Mustang Bass for a while now. But every time they appear on Reverb or Ebay they either sell quick or are way overpriced. Anybody know where I should look for them? Also my friend's brother has one and he may be willing to trade it for my Nate Mendel P Bass. Is this a fair trade or is he getting the better deal?

I think I've got the stain/varnish problem solved so thanks for all the help. You were really lucky to talk to that guitar tech. At the concerts I've been to, the techs don't wanna talk. About the Boss pedals though are some of them really that bad?

I don't know about his original one. All he said in the interview with Fender was that the previous owner stripped the paint and varnished it. I do know that the reissue Costello signature models are alder with a walnut stain on them.
10yalmost 10 years ago
Wish I had a Mustang Bass like that. I've been looking at some MIJ white ones for a while and every time I'm about to buy one it had just sold so I'm out of luck for the time being.

The Costello Jazzmaster is because the reissues have the alder body with walnut stain. And perhaps that's what it was with the Mustang Basses.
10yalmost 10 years ago
I'll try it out. Thanks for the advice. I picked up a few samples of some different stains today and I'm getting kinda close to the tone of that Mustang Bass.

Heck yeah man that's my dream guitar. I'm asking about this because I might do a Warmoth build like it.
10yalmost 10 years ago
What finish/wood do you think this one is? The person who listed it said it was stripped and finished in TruOil but I've never been able to reproduce these results with TruOil before.

I've noticed some really nice looking (color wise) woods from CBS era Fenders (I.e. Mustang Bass). Also Elvis Costello's Jazzmaster even though I'm pretty sure it was Pre-CBS. I recall him saying it was stripped of the paint by the pervious owner and varnished with regular furniture varnish. Can anybody tell me what woods these are, and what stains/varnishes/finishes to use on the woods?

If they make a Tele style output cup but only smaller that'd be great but if I must go with a football plate then I will.

So if I wanted to make a Jazzmaster what size side jack would I need? A 7/8" seems rather large considering I want the body to be slim like an actual Jazzmaster such as this one. Should I drill my own jack?

Fender Jazzmaster pickguard refit
There's just something about the '58 and '59s that I like the look of. And I've seen some of the J Mascis pickguards going around online so I'd just get one of those.

Fender Jazzmaster pickguard refit
So I acquired a Classic Player Jazzmaster and I really like the look of the '58/'59 Jazzsters with the anodized gold pickguards. I was wondering if I could fit a pickguard from the J Mascis Squier Jazzmaster onto the Classic Player JM since they both have adjust-o-matic bridges.

I'm upgrading my partscaster Strat and want to know if I should get a roller, brass, bone, or Tusq nut. I plan on using the tremolo sometimes but when it's used it's not much. I have locking tuners installed on it and want to get rid of that awful plastic nut it came with. What would suit my needs best?

How to get this sound? - Post here to get ideas on how your favourite band gets their sound.
Thanks man! I've got a hollow body and a solid state Marshall (and JAMC used Marshalls if I'm not mistaken) so all that's missing is the fuzz!

I'm looking for a good Jesus and Mary Chain sound. Like one in this video in particular. I also would like to know a general idea of how to set EQ and stuff. I've heard a Shin-Ei fuzz wah is a main ingredient in this sound but it doesn't seem to be all. What other things do you think would create this? Also if anyone knows how could I get that crazy feedback and still be able to control it? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0DZrLryJCnI

It worked really well the intonation and stuff worked pretty decently after the neck was on. I didn't have to freeze it, I just lightly sanded the neck pocket and used a mallet to put it in. The joint was nice and solid and everything lined up correctly. I had some electrical issues (probably a grounding issue) because I'm not very good with a soldering iron. I took it to my local music store to get the electrical problem sorted out and a professional setup done. A quick question about upgrading the guitar though. I was considering a roller but for it. If that isn't ideal what should I use? Brass, bone, or Tusq?

It was the humidity and heat outside that made my guitar body swell and expand but now it's inside at about 67° and I'll have to mallet the neck in but it'll work. Thanks for all the help!

Gotta do what you've gotta do man! Haha that's about what mine will look like

I'm sure it's an import there's no markings saying where it was made. So I just stick my guitar in the freezer and it should work?

It was an 80s Kramer Strat and I just wanted it for the neck and I could use the body later for parts or whatever. The neck is the right shape for the pocket it's just too wide and it's only barely too wide (like maybe a credit card thickness). So I'm wondering if I could be okay with widening the neck pocket and using the bridge that came with the Kramer Strat since its made for that neck.
10yabout 10 years ago
So I had a cheap Strat copy body lying around and I decided to paint it and finally finished it. Then I ordered a neck for it and it arrived today but it's slightly too big for the neck pocket. What should I do? Would rerouting the neck pocket throw off the guitar's alignment or something? Or do I just scrap the project? Thanks in advance for the help.

I have an old Epiphone SG with a bolt neck and I'm wondering if it would be easy to swap the neck for a 12 string neck and replace the hardware to accommodate 12 strings. Would I need to completely redo the body of the guitar or is it a quick adjustment here and there?

Squier VM Mustang is the worst I've gotten. I've had okay luck with Squier in the past but this time with the Mustang, I've had electricial problems such as the switches not working. It will not stay in tune, and the bridge saddles sink and cause the strings to buzz at the bridge. Also the tailpiece that holds the strings in place won't adjust up or down anymore. I even emailed Squier about all of these problems and I had no reply. And on the Epiphone discussion, I have a '91 (pre Joe Pass) Epiphone Emperor made in Korea and it is one of the best sounding and playing guitars I have.

Anyone have good pedal/settings/gear suggestions or advice on how to get a good Thee Oh Sees guitar tone from the albums Warm Slime or Carrion Crawler/The Dream? Thanks in advance!

I suck at guitar now does this happen to anyone else?
Thank you for your help. The neck I play is very comfortable to me. I have a modern C shape Fender Tele neck. I think it was just hand fatigue.
