ive used a heat gun with pretty good results. Chemical strippers are messy

thats why God invented sandpaper ;)

i take mine down to bare wood, reapply primer, then 2-3very light coats with sanding in between. not highly concerned with type of paint.

ive refinished mine several times after growing tired of the finish. im guessing you want to paint it?
