Exploring the 1000 Hurts pedal inspired by Steve Albini's Harmonic Percolator
1000 Hurts pedal - Telecaster demo
The 1000 Hurts is inspired by the legendary Interfax Harmonic Percolator HP-1 pedal used by Steve Albini.
Fender telecaster with SD Broadcaster pickups into the clean channel of a Music Man RD50 combo. The amp is going though a Fane Medusa speaker in a closed back 1x12 cab. Microphones are a Shure SM57 and Audio Technica ATM-25.
Way back in 2012 I decided I wanted a Harmonic Percolator that sounded like the one in Steve Albini's demo, but none of the clones or schematics I found hit the spot. After a lot of experimentation, and pouring over photos of the Interfax originals, I came up with this. It uses the original 1N695 germanium diodes and has a switch to change to silicon diodes. It uses both germanium and silicon transistors carefully selected for sound and gain. Inside it has a couple of trimmers, one to tune in the octave "sweet spot" and one for extra boost. With the diodes bypassed it's a great transistor boost that really pushes the front end of an amp. Cheers for looking.
