J Mascis is confirmed to use a 1961 Gibson Les Paul Jr, specifically the SG-shaped model, as demonstrated in the 2022 "Top-Shelf Alt-Rock Guitar Collection" interview by Reverb on YouTube. From the 4:13 mark to the 4:43 mark, Mascis discusses his use of this guitar, noting that he employed it for the opening riff of "Out There" from the album Where You Been (1993) and appreciates the "crunchy" sound it produces. Additionally, Mascis mentioned this guitar (as well as several others) in a 1997 interview with Maximum Guitar, which was published in the July 1997 issue of the magazine.
