About
808 State is a pioneering electronic music group originating from Manchester, England. Formed in 1987, the group initially comprised Graham Massey, Martin Price, and Gerald Simpson (better known as A Guy Called Gerald). Over the years, the lineup evolved, with Andrew Barker and Darren Partington joining, while Gerald Simpson departed for a solo career. Known for their dynamic fusion of acid house, techno, and ambient music, 808 State played a significant role in the late '80s and early '90s electronic scene, contributing to the rise of the Madchester sound. Their innovative approach to electronic composition and production has left a lasting influence on genres including big beat and IDM.
How to Sound Like 808 State
808 State’s music is characterized by its futuristic, immersive soundscapes and intricate layering of electronic textures. Their sonic palette is both rhythmic and melodic, featuring the hypnotic pulse of drum machines and the lush, evolving timbres of synthesizers. Central to their sound is the use of gear like the Roland JX-8P and the Roland TR-606 Drumatix, which provide their tracks with both warmth and precision. The group's music often explores a balance between complexity and spaciousness, using sequencers such as the Yamaha QY10 Music Sequencer to craft patterns that are both engaging and unpredictable. The blend of analog synthesis with digital sampling creates a sound that is deeply rooted in electronic tradition yet continually pushes towards the future.
