About

Absu is a seminal metal band originating from Dallas, Texas, renowned for their fusion of black metal, thrash metal, and death metal. The group was initially formed as "Dolmen" in 1989 by Shaftiel (vocals, guitar, bass) and Equitant Ifernain (lead guitar, bass). After a name change in 1991 to Absu, the band solidified its lineup with the addition of Proscriptor (Russ R. Givens) on drums and vocals, whose lyrical and songwriting prowess became a defining feature. Through their exploration of mythological occult metal, Absu has crafted a niche within extreme metal, weaving themes from Sumerian and Gaelic mysticism into their music. Their discography is marked by albums such as Barathrum and Tara, and they have toured with notable acts like Impaled Nazarene and Enslaved.

How to Sound Like Absu

Absu's sound is characterized by aggressive, intricate guitar work and dynamic, relentless drumming. The guitars often employ fast, razor-sharp riffs that are a staple of both thrash and death metal, with occasional melodic solos that add depth to their compositions. To capture their intense sonic landscape, consider using high-gain amps for a powerful, cutting tone, and incorporate palm-muted techniques for rhythm sections. The drums are typically fast-paced and complex, utilizing double bass patterns and blast beats to create a driving force behind the music. For those looking to emulate Absu's sound, focusing on precision and speed in both guitar and drum work is crucial, while also embracing the atmospheric elements through subtle use of reverb and modulation effects to evoke their mystical themes.
